An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the School of Journalism, Media and Culture as a Lecturer in PR.

Lecturer in Public Relations - (Teaching & Scholarship)

You will undertake a full teaching load, including the development, delivery and evaluation of modules/programmes primarily on the MA International Public Relations and Global Communication Management, and other undergraduate and post qualification provision within the School, if required. To supervise students and to carry out administrative duties within the work area as required. To pursue excellence in, teaching and to inspire others to do the same.

This post is full-time and open-ended and will be recruited at either Grade 6 or Grade 7 depending on skills and experience.

Salary:
£36,333 - £43,155 per annum (Grade 6) or
£45,737 - £52,841 per annum (Grade 7)

Job Description

Teaching

  • Design and deliver teaching programmes for courses and contribute to module development as part of a module team

Grade 7: independently contribute to module and course development and lead modules

  • Inspire undergraduate and postgraduate students under the guidance of a mentor / module leader and develop skills in assessment methods and in providing constructive feedback to students.

  • Supervise the work of students including the supervision of Undergraduate and Master’s students and the co-supervision of PGR’s

Grade 7: Acts as a PGR progress review panel member as required

  • Supply pastoral care through both acting as a Personal Tutor and providing support and guidance to students, building and establishing trust

Scholarship

  • Contribute to scholarship in the area of work through participation in conferences, seminars and other academic and professional forums to disseminate the results of individual scholarship

  • Engage in scholarly activity through journal articles and/or outputs which advance knowledge within the area of work

  • Contribute to scholarship through interdisciplinary working with individuals and teams within, and external to, the wider university community

  • Carry out other forms of scholarship including work associated with examinations (setting and marking paper and providing constructive feedback to students), administration, participation in committee work and scholarship development.

Other

  • To engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally to raise awareness of the School’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the School and the enhancement of its regional and national profile

  • To undergo personal and professional development that is appropriate to and which will enhance performance in the role.

  • To mentor colleagues with less experience and advise on personal development

  • To participate in School administration and activities to promote the School and its work to the wider University and the outside world

  • Any other duties not included above, but consistent with the role.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education
1. Postgraduate degree at PhD level in a related subject area or relevant industrial experience.
2. Grade 7: Postgraduate Certificate in University Teaching and Learning or equivalent qualification or experience

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
3. An established expertise and relevant experience in public relations and strategic communications, particularly in the following areas:

a. The use of data/analytics and/or AI to drive communications
b. The use of cultural/behavioural insight
c. Digital/social media management

4. Teaching experience at undergraduate/postgraduate level – significant experience at Grade 7
5. Grade 7: Growing National reputation within academic field
6. Demonstrate specialist knowledge and current advancements within the field.
7. Ability to design, deliver and continuously develop modules across the Schools teaching programmes.

Pastoral, Communication and Team Working
8. Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex and conceptual ideas clearly and confidently to others using high level skills and a range of media, and proven ability to demonstrate creativity, innovation and teamworking within work.
9. The ability to provide appropriate pastoral support to students, appreciate the needs of individual students and their circumstances and to act as a personal tutor.
10. Grade 7: Ability to act as module leader and co-ordinate with others to ensure student needs and expectations are met.

Desirable Criteria

11. Relevant professional qualification(s).
12. Proven ability to work without close supervision
13. Proven ability to adapt to the changing requirements of the Higher Education community.
14. Evidence of ability to participate in and develop both internal and external networks and utilise them to enhance the teaching and research activities of the School.
15. A willingness to take responsibility for academically related administration.
