This full time post is available 1st September 2023 on a permanent basis.

Department of English and Creative Writing

We are a large and dynamic department with more than seventy academics from different countries around the world. Exeter is a UNESCO City of Literature, and we are proud of the history of the Southwest’s literary culture and of our local archives that inform our research and our teaching. We welcome students from all backgrounds and thrive to make their experience at Exeter the best it can be.

The curriculum at Exeter covers all periods from the Middle Ages to the contemporary moment with the “literary text” conceived in the broadest possible terms. From the Book of Genesis to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, from little magazines to comics and graphic novels, our curriculum equips students with the critical vocabulary and/or creative skills to confidently work with a range of literary forms and genres. Alongside literature and creative writing modules, the Department is home to our Liberal Arts degree programme, which emphasises interdisciplinarity while enabling students to select a specialism (or Major). Our staff also teach on workplace-facing undergraduate modules in Applied/Digital Humanities, Publishing and the Creative Industries, which are popular career destinations for many of our students. We run a dedicated M.A. in Publishing.

The role

You will:

  • To work with colleagues across the university in the redesign and expansion of Exeter’s Liberal Arts provision (including the programme’s digital humanities offering), ensuring student satisfaction on the programme and securing intake from new student markets around the world.
  • To fulfil research, teaching and administration duties as a lecturer in Liberal Arts with a specialism in Literary Studies in English. The postholder will be expected to teach on the Liberal Arts programme and they will have oversight of personal tutoring on the programme in their role Director of Student Experience for Liberal Arts in their first year at Exeter. They will also be tasked with developing the digital humanities components within the expanded Liberal Arts degree programme while contributing to the English Literary Studies programmes at UG and PGT/PGR level. They will have a co-ordinating role in developing interdisciplinary pathways and contribution to Liberal Arts modules and options. They will also be expected to innovate, designing and refining new and existing offering to enhance the quality of the programme.
  • To extend the research profile of English Literature and Liberal Arts, attracting and supervising postdoctorate researchers and postgraduate research students.
  • To collaborate with colleagues within the University of Exeter as a whole in order to develop and support the Department of English and Creative Writing’s and the Faculty’s research programmes.
  • To contribute to the general operation of the Faculty as a member of its academic team.

About you

You will have:

  • A PhD or equivalent in Literary Studies in English ((with already well-developed digital literacy or willingness to immediately acquire digital skills), and have an independent, internationally recognised research programme in a relevant active field of research. We particularly welcome applications from candidates whose research interests are aligned with the strategic priorities of the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences Faculty at Exeter
  • A strong record in attracting funding for research, or demonstrate potential to attract such funding
  • An active approach to inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary research
  • Enthusiasm for delivering high quality undergraduate and PGT programmes
  • Strong connections and funded projects with business and community partner
  • Involvement in projects which develop impact
