Lecturer in Civil Engineering
Cardiff School of Engineering
The appointee will join the Computational Mechanics and Engineering AI (CMAI) research Group in the Department of Architectural, Civil and Environmental Engineering.

CMAI group has established an international reputation for developing new generation smart computational engineering solutions, which are key for modern data driven engineering. Smart materials, structures and digital infrastructure systems are the three main focus areas in CMAI, and our physics and mechanics informed BIM, Digital Twins and Engineering AI, aim at producing step changes towards human centred digitalization for the built environment.

You will deliver research-led teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and contribute to the research record of the School through commitment to carrying out research leading to publication. Conducting interdisciplinary research within the School of Engineering with a specialism in smart structures and digital infrastructure systems, you will also design and deliver teaching programmes for courses in Civil Engineering.

With a Postgraduate degree at PhD level in Civil Engineering or other relevant subject, you will have a relevant professional qualification e.g. C. Eng (Chartered Engineer), or be working towards it, with an expectation of gaining Chartered status within 3 years. In addition, you will have an established expertise and proven portfolio of research in smart materials, structures and digital infrastructure systems and teaching experience at undergraduate or postgraduate level.

This post is full time (35 hours per week), available immediately and is open ended.

The post is available at Grade 6 or Grade 7, the grade appointed on will be dependent on experience.

Salary:
£39,347 - £44,263 per annum (Grade 6) or
£49,794 - £54,395 per annum (Grade 7)

Job Description

Main function

To deliver high-quality and research-led teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and contribute to the research record of the School through commitment to carrying out research leading to the publishing of high-quality research. To pursue excellence in research, teaching and enterprise and to inspire others to do the same.

Main Duties

Research
  • To conduct research in smart structures and/ or digital infrastructure systems related to physics and mechanics informed Engineering AIs and contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University by the production of measurable outputs including bidding for funding, publishing in national academic journals and conferences and/or other research outputs, and the recruitment and supervision of postgraduate research students.
Grade 7: contribute to internationally recognised research performance

  • To develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research including research funding proposals
Grade 7: independently develop research objectives, acting as PI as required
  • To give conference/seminar papers at a local and national level
Grade 7: present at international level
  • To participate in School research activities.

Teaching
  • To design and deliver teaching programmes for courses and contribute to module development as part of a module team
Grade 7: independently contribute to module and course development and lead modules
  • To carry out other forms of scholarship including work associated with examinations (setting and marking paper and providing constructive feedback to students), administration, participation in committee work, and the pastoral care of students of Cardiff University
  • To inspire undergraduate and postgraduate students under the guidance of a mentor / module leader and develop skills in assessment methods and in providing constructive feedback to students.
  • To supervise the work of students including the supervision of Undergraduate and Master’s students and the co-supervision of PGR’s
Grade 7: Acts as a PGR progress review panel member as required
  • To act as a Personal Tutor and provide pastoral support to students

Other – all Grades
  • To engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally to raise awareness of the School’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the School and the enhancement of its regional and national profile.
  • To undergo personal and professional development that is appropriate to and which will enhance performance in the role of Lecturer.
  • To participate in School administration and activities to promote the School and its work to the wider University and the outside world
  • Any other duties not included above, but consistent with the role.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education
1. Postgraduate degree at PhD level in Civil Engineering or other relevant subject.
2. Have relevant professional qualification(s) e.g. C. Eng (Chartered Engineer) and Postgraduate Certificate in University Teaching and Learning or equivalent qualification or experience (grade 7), or be working towards them, with an expectation of gaining Chartered status within the 3 year probationary period of the appointment (grade 6).

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
3. An established expertise and proven portfolio of research within the areas of smart structures and/ or digital infrastructure systems related to physics and mechanics informed Engineering AIs. Evidence of a track record relating a number of the following:
  • working in the built environment, infrastructure or construction engineering areas;
  • fundamental understanding of structural / mechanics theory, algorithms, and their smart applications;
  • large scale data driven digital engineering and informatics, including BIM – Building Information Modelling, Digital Twins, IoTs, and their applications (data analytics) in sustainable buildings, infrastructure, and wider built environment;
  • Large-scale statistical methodology and inference, nature-inspired computing and high dimensional smart decision making; advanced computing, including high performance /cloud computing, edge computing, micro-service oriented system;
  • research on BIM, e.g. parametric modelling, collaborative design, nD modelling, clash detection, BIM integration with GIS; BIM standards, e.g. ISO 19650, and IFC; smart compliance / model checking, NLP, large language models; Knowledge engineering, e.g. ontology modelling and reasoning.
