Position Summary and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Product Engineering Manager the Lead Engineer is a recognised expert in the product technology. They will be responsible for supporting the technical oversight of activity on the product and may, as appropriate, provide leadership on production issues, R&D or customer funded projects or customer application issues.
An excellent communicator and team player they will be highly proactive in working with members of the wider team providing coaching, mentoring and guidance to support skills development.
This role covers Switching products including Thyratrons, spark gaps and TVGs. Understanding design requirements across the product applications, the Lead Engineer will ensure pragmatic approach to product design, manufacturing solutions and adopt always sound vacuum engineering principles.
They will be working with other experts across the various technical domains and with other team members through all phases of the project lifecycle to lead development through to completion.

Main accountabilities:
  • Review customer & stakeholder specifications & requirements. Prepares technical responses to the customer including product selection, design feasibility and statements of compliance
  • Defining and documenting the electronic architecture of the device balancing competing performance, commercial and manufacturing requirements are met.
  • Ensures the critical to quality features of the product are captured and communicated to mechanical/vacuum engineers – includes materials, critical tolerances and sensitivities. Validates that the mechanical design delivers on the CTQ’s.
  • Leading the activity to define the design failure mechanisms using a structured approaches such Design and Process FMEA. Ensures the product design mitigates the key risks.
  • Leads project defining activity:
    • Works with systems engineers to define requirements for product such as test equipment and protection.
    • Works with project managers to define work package breakdown
    • Works with test engineers to define test and characterisation requirements to evaluate the performance of the new devices and to resolve issues
  • Satisfies customers (internal and external) with fast, accurate and technically competent resolution of applications issues throughout the product lifecycle
  • Identifies IPR/patent issues and opportunities ensuring these are assessed and drives raising of claims as required
  • Leads technical progress reviews and provides updates to project manager and/or customer, continually checking expectations
  • Provides effective coaching of other engineers, product managers and marketing specialists in own disciplines

Qualifications

Essential experience:
  • Vacuum tube processing techniques.
  • Knowledge of thyratron, spark gap and TVG designs including practical experience of architecture, processing & test performance and critical to quality features.
  • Knowledge of thyratron and switching applications such as, radiotherapy, particle accelerators and lithotripsy systems.
  • Good working knowledge of major system sub components.
  • Knowledge of high voltage hold-off, breakdown and conduction including test & measurement techniques for characterisation of components and structures
  • High power/voltage test experience (system performance evaluation).
  • Excellent networking and interpersonal skills, particularly in a customer-facing capacity.
  • Experience in a customer facing role.
  • Experience of providing input into technical bids and proposals.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • An ability and willingness to travel both domestically and internationally.
  • Self-motivated and driven to succeed.
