Lead Electronics Engineer – Technical Support

The team at Edwards are expanding and are keen to hear from Engineers with relevant skills and experience to join our welcoming team.

The Role

To provide technical support to all Product Companies, Service Technology Centres, Customer Centres and Divisions for all Semicon and Industrial Vacuum products / E-Parts that have been designed by the Eastbourne Product Company. These include drive electronics, control electronics and all associated software.

To provide support to the development of new Semicon and Industrial Vacuum products.

This is not a software support role and requires hands on technical experience & knowledge


Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide advice on and testing of, replacement parts to cover any component obsolescence or supply issues for all E-Parts designed by the Eastbourne Product Company.
  • Propose, obtain agreement and implement Copy Exact changes as required to ensure no customer non-conformities or interruptions to E-Part manufacturing.
  • Carry out compliance testing to EN Standards (e.g. EMC and Electrical Safety) for existing products and update NRTL compliance listings (UL /CSA).
  • Carry out Product Lifecycle Management for all E-Parts designed by the Eastbourne Product Company including component BOM health checks.
  • Propose, test and implement any product redesigns or refreshes because of lifecycle management, component obsolescence or component supply issues.
  • Supporting senior engineers & engineers with process and supporting lead engineers and managers with strategic decision making.
  • This role serves as the key point of contact for any product lifecycle and therefore requires somebody with a range of skill sets, including technical supervision and project lead.
  • The role requires a great level of technical and product knowledge, the ability to determine root cause and to communicate to all disciplines and seniority levels within the organisation.
  • The Eastbourne Product Company serves all six Vacuum Technique Divisions: Scientific Vacuum, Industrial Vacuum, Semicon, Semicon Chamber, Semicon Service, Vacuum Technique Service and this role supports the revenue generated by them all.
  • This includes Scientific, Semicon and Industrial Vacuum product ranges that generate a revenue of over £30m for the Eastbourne Product Company.
  • The role will have 5 direct reports.


Skills and Experience:

  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree or equivalent. HNC/HND may also qualify.
  • Strong working knowledge in a similar role with exposure to a broad range of digital and analogue circuit types – small signal to power electronics.
  • Electronic engineering background, including knowledge of circuit diagrams and the ability to identify the function of various types of analogue and digital circuit components; some design experience highly advantageous.
  • Be able to fault find down to component level and determine the root cause for failure/damage in the associated circuit. Be able to propose solutions to problems discovered including circuit design changes where required.
  • Producing reports on the findings to feed back to customers or the technology team. Experience in producing 8D reports advantageous.
  • Able to support key customers through:
    • Difficult investigations or problems.
    • Agreeing realistic and effective actions with customers.
    • Provide ongoing support to products with regards to component obsolescence and product compliance.
  • Understanding of product compliance is essentail; ideally product safety, environmental legislation and NRTL approvals.
  • Some experience in EMC related failure modes and solutions.
  • Broad electronics knowledge including microcontrollers, embedded software, digital and analogue circuits, serial communications, power electronics, switch mode power supplies.
  • Competent to work on high voltage single phase and 3-phase circuits.
  • Experience in managing and developing a small team of engineers and technicians would be advantageous.
  • Ability to strengthen the technical support team by demonstrating strong leadership to ensure effective recruitment and selection, objective setting, competency growth and organisation development.
  • Ability to delegate to others when required.
