What is the Role?

SSE require a Lead Cloud Engineer to provide technical leadership and support to the Cloud DevOps team, who deliver enabling change across the SSE cloud platform.

The Lead must also be able to work across a diverse group of stakeholders and manage priorities to maximise the value delivered by the team, partnering with Product Owners to optimize scheduling and turn-around of the team’s backlog.

In partnership with the Enterprise and Cloud Architecture functions the Lead keeps the overall technical roadmap, architecture runway and foundation design for cloud in compliance with SSE standards and industry best practice.

Collectively that team supports and continually develops the platform to maintain currency, availability, and reliability on a secure foundation.

Responsibility & Experience

Ideally, you’ll be able to demonstrate a track record across each of the following categories.

Reliability

Work closely with Enterprise and Cloud Architecture functions to maintain a foundation architecture that is in step with industry best practice, e.g. Microsoft WAF; regular engagement with product teams to ensure the right quality and sustainability standards are built into the architecture release train.

Modernising

Takes a lead role in the engineering delivery of incremental cloud platform improvements; supports Business Unit owned cloud transformations by sharing cloud standards with delivery partners and gives engineering guidance into the overall growth and modernisation strategy for cloud.

Stakeholders

Champions the Cloud Engineering Team and supports the team in engaging with technical leads to ensure that design and implementation of changes across the Cloud platform are efficient and aligned with the technical roadmap; support Enterprise and Cloud Architecture to keep the technical roadmap up to date and in line with latest technology developments.

Leadership

Develop and mature the DevOps engineering team, growing their capability as the cloud platform and services portfolio scales out; supports day to day workload delivery, demand/backlog triaging, and proactively manage any emergent escalations.

Additional Technical Skills

This is predominantly a management role, however you’ll need to work as part the team to help develop and troubleshoot solutions needs, so a technical track record of delivering cloud infrastructure with one or more of the major cloud providers e.g. Azure, AWS, Google; with exposure to technologies and processing environments such as the following would be great.
  • Powershell and Terraform experience with detailed knowledge of (but not limited to) the AzureRM provider
  • Azure - Experience of PaaS components (API Management Gateway / App Gateway / Azure Firewall / CosmosDB / SQLDB / SQLMI, etc.)
  • Knowledge and experience of implementing Security standards (CIS / NIST) using automation
