The Spirit of Herefordshire – A place to thrive

We have ambitions for Herefordshire to be an exemplar of 21st century rural living where market towns and rural communities are valued and recognised for the contributions they make to the success of the county. It’s a great place to live with a beautiful natural environment and we’re creating a thriving local economy which is sustainable, well connected and offers wellbeing across the whole of the county.

Lawyer – Litigation

Our Legal Services department has had new investment to develop and grow our team of Lawyers. We are seeking ambitious individuals who share our vision to provide high quality services and achieve the LExcel Accreditation.

You will be responsible for criminal and regulatory files including health and safety and trading standards prosecutions. There will also be opportunity to work on employment and civil claims and gain experience in regulatory, licencing, and human rights as well as case work and advocacy. Working across several directorates in the council, you will proactively coordinate and manage a mixed caseload of litigation matters ranging from environmental, regulatory, criminal, animal welfare, blue badges, fly tipping amongst others. Experience in these fields would be beneficial but not essential as full training and support will be provided. As such, we welcome applications from individuals with experience from both public sector and private practice.

This is an exciting and varied role and will require you to be able to attend some court hearings in person in Hereford, usually once or twice a month. There may on occasions be a requirement to attend court in surrounding areas.

In return, we offer an opportunity for career progression, along with a comprehensive training and development programme. We have flexible working with the majority of the Legal Department working agile. The Council has recently undergone a transformation allowing it to be a modern, vibrant workplace where creativity and collaboration is actively encouraged and staff feel engaged and empowered. Employees are provided with choice, tools and the environment to deliver remotely or flexibly.

There is also a relocation package on offer for those interested in moving to Herefordshire.

Career grading for this role will be based on meeting the relevant core competencies.
