Landscape Architect

Full time / Permanent

£25,481 - £37,890

We are looking for an skilled, creative and highly motivated Landscape Architect to join the Natural Environment Team

You will demonstrate a high level of experience as a landscape specialist working within a planning environment and giving effective landscape advice. You’ll also be working within a range of teams in Dorset Council comprising a range of specialists including tree, conservation and planning and ecology professionals.

This is a unique role that combines landscape planning advice and design project work in one role.

Dorset has a fantastic built and natural environment also a hugely attractive place to live and work.

What you will be doing

This role has two key focuses and will be working across a number of teams. You will be:

Providing specialist advice to planning case officers on landscape matters in relation to waste and minerals. Plans go through an independent examination process and must be defended in public in front of an independent inspector: all decisions must be backed up by appropriate evidence and be shown to be in line with national planning policy. Decisions to refuse planning applications can be taken to appeal where they need to be defended robustly. A significant level of specialist knowledge and expertise in minerals and waste is therefore required.

Providing specialist landscape advice, general design and project management for agreed Dorset Council projects, for example working with the Dorset Council Landscape team to provide concept and full designs for schools in Dorset. You will need to be creative in your design approach and have an eye for detail. Leading on a range of Dorset Council projects by providing the landscape design and advice will be a key element of this role.

About you

Applicants are normally expected to:

hold a postgraduate diploma or equivalent in Landscape Architecture, giving eligibility for licentiate membership of the Landscape Institute.

Chartered membership of the Landscape Institute is normally be expected for appointment at, or progression to, grade 10/11.

Undertaking continuous professional development in order to keep up with changes in national policy and case law is essential.

You will have a high degree of autonomy, independently managing your own workload.

One day you might be looking at proposals of a quarry site in Dorset, the next you might be working with others to design Suitable Alternative Green Spaces or play areas.

Working at Dorset Council

This is a unique opportunity to join a brand new council in Dorset – home to the spectacular Jurassic Coast and thriving market towns and villages with a strong sense of community and identity.

On 1 April 2019, five district and borough councils and the county council were replaced by the new Dorset Council which will deliver more efficient, accessible and modern public services.

You will have the opportunity to build your career in a modern, flexible and inclusive organisation, and this is an exciting time to join – at the start of our journey together.

NB: You will be unable to view the job description and person specification forms after this vacancy has closed. We cannot accept CVs in place of an application form as we require the same range of information from all our candidates.

Dorset Council is committed to making our recruitment process barrier-free, and as inclusive as possible for everyone.
