About us

The UCL Division of Surgery and Interventional Science is a collaborative and cross-disciplinary environment where clinicians, engineers, allied health professionals and researchers are constantly striving for innovative approaches to treatment. This includes developing highly effective methods which go beyond the boundaries of conventional wisdom and treating each patient as an individual. We are seeking to appoint a Laboratory Manager for the Department of Orthopaedics and Musculoskeletal Science, within the UCL Division of Surgery and Interventional Science. The role will be based at our Stanmore Campus with support for other campuses as required.

About the role

The post holder will have supervisory responsibility for day-to-day coordination, running and maintenance of the laboratories at their site. They will be expected to manage all daily aspects of the laboratories including the supervision of laboratory technicians, and will assist academic staff and principal investigators (PIs) in day-to-day duties, ensuring the smooth running of the laboratory and research facilities. The post-holder will be expected to manage all daily aspects of the laboratories performing high-specification experimental work in an interdisciplinary research centre. They will aid in the training of staff and students in tensile strength testing, contact angle, and FTIR and any other specialised equipment as required. They will also manage service facilities for internal and external users, and to perform cutting edge research under the guidance of the PI. In addition to their core duties, the Laboratory Manager will act as the Division Health and Safety Officer. This is a part-time 0.8FTE (29.2 hours per week) post and the salary will be pro rata. About you

Applications are invited from candidates who have a degree in a relevant subject area, although candidates with other appropriate experience will be considered. Proven experience in laboratory management in a scientific environment and experience of teaching and supervising staff/students is essential. Candidates will have excellent organisational skills with the ability to train and support researchers in a diverse portfolio of techniques. Knowledge and demonstrable experience of interpreting and applying Health and Safety regulations and procedures in a biomedical facility is desirable.
