Down House, the home of Charles Darwin welcomes visitors from around the world. It is here where Darwin wrote ‘On the Origin of Species’, his flagship publication which was to change scientific thinking forever. We have a growing team of volunteers who help maintain the gardens at Down House and we need your admin skills to help recruit and support our volunteer team. In this role, you will be:
  • Helping to promote and advertise the volunteer roles
  • Helping prepare for and support volunteer recruitment events
  • Working with the volunteer database and online rota system to update individual volunteer records
  • Updating the IRIS database of plant records
  • Helping us communicate with the team by putting together the volunteers’ newsletter
  • Other administrative tasks to support the volunteer team.
We’re looking for an enthusiastic and committed person who would enjoy working in our friendly team. You’ll need to be:
  • computer literate with knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • organised with an eye for detail
  • confident about talking to volunteers, both in person and on the phone.
  • Volunteers may be reimbursed for reasonable local travel costs between home and volunteering location
  • A volunteer pass allowing free access to English Heritage sites is available after the completion of four months and 60 hours of volunteering
  • A certificate for your personal profile to demonstrate work carried out for English Heritage is available to show future employers or further education providers.
  • Volunteers will be supplied with an appropriate English Heritage uniform.
  • Core training and role specific training will be given. As a member of a small team you’ll receive on-going support and one-to-one training on our procedures and volunteer systems.
