Summary Are you a manager of collections or houses? Can you bring your conservation knowledge to this close knit team? We need someone who can champion fantastic collections care and practise, visitor welcome and the daily operation of managing volunteers to give great experiences.


This is a Key Representative role - Accommodation is provided to the postholder for the proper or better performance of your duties in accordance with Trust criteria and HMRC rules.

What it’s like to work here

Croft Castle is an ancient place set within almost 1700 acres of tenanted farmland, including an Iron Age Hillfort and Castle.

Croft is renowned for being a friendly property and the team work closely together to support each other. You’ll work with a wider property team of staff and volunteers with the support of the Herefordshire Management team, led by the General Manager.

You’ll lead and support a team of 2 Collection Assistants, a Collections and House officer plus volunteers, and support the property department operations and experiences.

What you’ll be doing

As the senior lead of the House Team, you’ll manage the team to implement preventive conservation and cleaning programmes in the house to ensure excellent standards of care, delivering strategies to improve conservation. You’ll manage the planning and implementation of conservation projects, collections care and daily opening of the house ensuring appropriate resources are in place to provide an excellent visitor experience.

You’ll collect and record information to inform our understanding of the house and the collection and use preventive conservation techniques to improve how we conserve, interpret and present the property. Leading by example you’ll ensure a culture of excellent customer care, engaging our visitors with conservation and the values and behaviours of the National Trust.

We’re looking for someone who is passionate about collections and the customer care and willing to jump into any part of the team when needed.

Who we’re looking for You’ll need to have the following experience:
  • A degree in relevant field or equivalent level 3 qualification and / or Operational experience in Historic Properties
  • A working knowledge of preventative conservation, pest management and practical application
  • Operational experience of collections management, presentation and practical application
  • People management skills including rota planning, objective setting and conducting performance reviews and working with and managing volunteers
  • Some knowledge of managing budgets and finance
  • Knowledge of visitor experience principles and approaches to optimising visitor engagement and enjoyment
