Edwards Clevedon have an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer to join our Core Technology Team.

You will be helping to develop new technologies to reduce the environmental impact of semiconductor, flat panel display and solar cell manufacture, while also enabling our customer’s advancements in silicon processing techniques. This appointment will increase the capacity of the team to deliver technology projects in a timely manner and is key to future succession planning.

The Role

The main responsibilities of the role are as follows:
  • Design and develop new technology elements to support abatement projects.
  • Support / verify the designs with appropriate mix of calculation (e.g. FEA), simulation and testing.
  • Apply suitable numerical and statistical methods to the analysis of test data.
  • Investigate prototyping techniques to realise designs and support sample approval for new parts and assemblies
  • Assist with lab test request and safety review documentation
  • Support trials of new technology on customers’ sites
  • Participate in HAZOP, DFMEA studies and risk analysis techniques
  • Suggest manufacturing methods and cost estimates for volume production
  • Be accountable for the detailed documentation of the design (models, drawings, design data, BOM, test data) ensuring all relevant information is recorded in a timely manner.
  • Identify potential for gaining IP, prepare records of invention and perform searches to support patent drafting.
  • Prepare project reports and presentations to enable dissemination of results to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Liaise with suppliers and internal facilities to identify components and organize delivery in step with project timelines.
To Be Successful You Will Need
  • A good mechanically biased engineering degree (or other relevant engineering qualification with 2 years industry experience)
  • Experience in prototyping and/or product development
  • Appreciation of design for manufacture and design for assembly will be advantageous
  • Experience in the use of a range of engineering materials and with several manufacturing methods/techniques
  • Experience in materials compatibility – appropriate selection of materials for use in harsh thermal and/or chemical environments
  • 3D and 2D CAD skills (SolidWORKS, Visio, AutoCAD and/or other drafting tools)
  • An understanding of Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and system schematics
  • Results orientation - focus on delivering to project milestones and timescales
  • Positive attitude and ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines
  • Understand key technical deliverables and requirements and can report concisely to more senior engineers and the project manager
Scope Of The Role

The role will be based in the Exhaust Management Systems Development Laboratory in Clevedon, North Somerset, and will have membership of the Core Technology team. This, in turn, forms part of the Vacuum Technique Technology Group, which oversees research and development across the whole Atlas Copco Vacuum Technique Business Area. The group aims to serve the technological needs of all the Divisions within Vacuum Technique, with our work in Clevedon specifically focused to customers in the Semiconductor Industry. The team currently has 14 members and operates on a budget of ca. 2.5 million USD per annum.

The Core Technology Team conduct a variety of projects to address a range of current and foreseen customer needs. These cover a range of semiconductor process gas abatement technologies, including combustion, plasma, absorption and solid-state reaction, which serve to reduce the risks that would otherwise occur from the release of toxic, flammable and global warming gases, or the by-products that result from their treatment. Although these are specialized processes, someone with a practical outlook, logical approach and inventive mindset, will have much to offer to their advance. Projects may be performed by individuals or in small teams, and there are opportunities to be inventive in either environment. Research priorities are influenced by product need and progress is typically reported back to the team on a monthly basis.

On average, technology projects take ca. 1 year to complete, and initially you will be aided with project planning and the identification of significant milestones. However, you will be encouraged to take increasing ownership of projects and ultimately to propose your own projects to address upcoming challenges. With increasing experience, there is opportunity to progress within the company, via an established pathway, with retention of a technical focus. Furthermore, there will also be opportunity to gain greater experience of the semiconductor industry, visit customer sites and collaborate with other parts of Vacuum Technique, both in the UK and overseas.
