JOB PURPOSETo develop, deliver and maintain a rich set of digital services in support of the Business School’s plans for teaching, learning, research, administration and business development.Duties & ResponsibilitiesApplication development
  • Liaise closely with customers and colleagues in order to ensure that project specifications are accurately defined and user interfaces appropriately designed.
  • Employ a wide range of software tools and platforms, including: Java, relational & non-relational databases, SQL, HTML, CSS and Javascript.
  • Develop new system features in both back-end and front-end technologies
  • Plan, design and execute application testing
  • Create and maintain project documentation
  • Explore new technologies and keep informed about current best practice
  • Work effectively as part of the team.
Application design
  • The design of new web systems and features for use by staff, students, alumni and external users.
  • Design systems with particular regard to the key requirements of creating secure, compliant, scalable applications that also provide an overall excellent user experience.
Application support
  • Perform application maintenance
  • Triage and solve bugs and problems
  • Provide support to customers and answer queries
  • Maintain databases
Other duties allocated by the Head of Applications Development as appropriate within the context of the scope and grading of the role.Person SpecificationThe Person Specification focuses on the knowledge, skills, experience and qualifications required to undertake the role effectively. This is measured by (a) Application Form, (b) Test/Exercise, (c) Interview, (d) Presentation.Essential Criteria 1 A good honours degree in a relevant discipline or can demonstrate a commensurate understanding of software engineering and computing theory. (a)Essential Criteria 2Development (or relevant) experience that should include hands-on application of programming languages (including Java and Javascript) on both the back-end and front-end. (a, b, c)Essential Criteria 3Knowledge of HTTP & web workings,Java,HTML,CSS,Javascript,Accessibility,User Experience,Object Oriented Design,Relational databases,SQL,Web interfaces to databases,business systems eg API, Security in the provision of web services/facilities. (a, b, c)Essential Criteria 4The ability to liaise effectively with customers and colleagues in order to ensure that project specifications are accurately defined and user interfaces appropriately designed. (a, c)Essential Criteria 5Experience of client-side Javascript and modern browser technologies, and building complex front-end functionality with a framework.
