Job Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Medical Secretary to work within the Dermatology Department, based at Corbett Hospital.

Applicants should be qualified with the Medical Secretary AMSPAR Diploma and have experience working in NHS or Healthcare administration, with RSA/OCR II typewriting/word processing or equivalent together with GCSE (or equivalent) at Grade C or above in English Language. Applicants must have strong audio typing and transcription abilities.

Applicants should be proficient in using all aspects of Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Excel and Outlook; will be highly organised and able to manage electronic diaries. The applicant must be able to prioritise and work to deadlines and targets. Experience in Oasis/BigHand would be preferable but not essential.

Main duties of the job

To provide a full PA / secretarial service within the Dermatology department and Ambulatory Directorate.

To undertake accurate audio/copy typing of medical correspondence and general administration for the Consultants and their teams. This will include highly sensitive and complex medical terminology with a need for confidentiality.

To organise the rearrangement of clinical activity (out-patient clinics) when the Consultant or other member of his/her team arranges leave, by liaising with the appropriate members of staff within the Trust.

Assist in achieving National and Local performance targets by ensuring clinical letters are produced in a prescribed timescales.

Essential Criteria

Education and Qualifications
  • English and Maths at GCSE level at C or above or equivalent
  • Medical Secretary AMSPAR Diploma or equivalent
  • RSA 1/RSA 2 typing or equivalent
  • NVQ level 2 in business administration or equivalent level of qualification
Desirable criteria
  • ECDL or proof of competence with Microsoft office applications i.e. Word, PowerPoint, Access, Excel, Outlook
Essential Criteria

Skills and Experience
  • Previous secretarial /administration experience
  • Experience of using office computer programs including Excel, Word, Outlook and Access
  • Ability work on own initiative and to effectively prioritise own work load, to work to tight deadlines and under pressure
  • Excellent attention to detail
Desirable criteria
  • Previous employment in the NHS in a similar role
  • Experience of data reporting and working with Pivot tables
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
