We are looking for an enthusiastic Clinical or Counselling Psychologist to provide psychological input to our acute ward, Applewood ward. We would be particularly interested in hearing from applicants who have experience of working in acute settings, who have a proven commitment to improving the quality of care provided in in-patient services. The postholder will also have the opportunity to undertake a small amount of ongoing therapy work (0.2 wte), alongside their work on the ward.

The successful applicant will be enthusiastic and highly motivated to provide a good quality, evidence based psychological service within a changing and challenging environment. They will have experience of working with individuals with complex psychological difficulties and risk issues within secondary care and a particular interest in working with individuals in acute distress. They will enjoy working as part of a team and thrive on working under pressure.

Applewood ward is an 18 bedded unit, providing input for adults of working age experiencing acute mental health difficulties. The post holder will provide assessment, formulation and brief psychological intervention for service users during their admission to Applewood. Consultation, staff supervision and reflective practice will also be key aspects of the role. The post holder would be expected to play a significant role in contributing to staff training on the ward, alongside other psychologists in the Locality who work in ward based and acute settings. Psychology input to Applewood ward is well established and highly valued by the staff team. Input around staff wellbeing has been particularly crucial during the COVID pandemic. The previous postholder was very involved in developments within the Locality around the provision of Staff Support Debriefs and in Trustwide work around compassionate leadership and trauma informed care. The postholder will work closely with other colleagues providing input to the ward, including our Art Therapy and Occupational Therapy teams.

The post holder will receive line management and clinical supervision from the Swindon Psychological Therapies Service, based at Chatsworth House. Swindon Psychological Therapies Service (PTS) comprises a supportive team of Clinical Psychologists, Counselling Psychologists, Clinical Nurse Specialists in CBT and Arts Psychotherapists. We offer a range of therapeutic approaches, including CBT, DBT, SCM and CFT. We have established links with local training providers in Clinical and Counselling Psychology. All PTS staff have access to regular activities to support their ongoing professional development. The team also has a strong emphasis on promoting staff wellbeing, including a monthly wellbeing sessions and fortnightly Compassion Focussed Staff Support session
