From day one, our mission has been to create an independent business with a unique culture – one that is controlled by the people who work for it. Finding the most talented and entrepreneurial people has always been key to our success.
People come to Howden for lots of different reasons, but they stay for the same one: our culture. That’s what sets us apart, and why we nurture and retain the best talent in the market. Whatever your priorities – work/life balance, career progression, sustainability, volunteering - you’ll find like-minded people driving change at Howden.
  • An excellent opportunity for a product owner to join a product management competency working across DUAL Europe
  • We are looking for a proactive, solution-driven candidate with excellent commercial and communication skills
  • Full-time position: 5 days a week (London-based with European travel)
Role overview
We are on a mission to transform how we deliver software across our next-generation Salesforce Industries underwriting platform. We are building a product management team across Europe, reporting to the Director of Product Management. You will be a crucial part of DUAL’s product capability and discipline, creating and delivering long-term product roadmaps driven by the DUAL strategy.
DUAL has embarked upon a multi-year, European-wide programme of change to ensure the business has the right systems and processes to enable us to achieve our growth ambitions. We are working to replace our legacy systems, optimise our processes and improve the experience for our clients and colleagues throughout the UK and Europe. The continued successful delivery and roll-out of Salesforce Industries is a crucial part of this.
As a product owner, you will be responsible for one of our key competencies that will ensure the predictable delivery of our Salesforce Industries underwriting platform. We are building three key competencies – building the right thing, building it right, and building it fast. You’ll appreciate all three elements, but your responsibility will be building the right thing.
Converting ideas into a steady stream of valuable products and services is a complex endeavour that requires ongoing coordination and communication across teams. Product Management is integral to this process, and as product owner, you will be accountable for representing the customer to the delivery team and maximising the value of the products created by:
  • Building relationships with a variety of stakeholders, including internal and external customers, business managers, and development team(s)
  • Working with stakeholders to create a product vision and repeatedly communicating that product vision
  • Ensuring product goals are clear, and the vision is aligned with DUAL’s business objectives and needs
  • Identifying and developing the product/solution vision, defining the product roadmap, and the underlying capabilities required to meet them
  • Ensuring product objectives are defined and structured in OKRs (objectives and key results) in support of multi-year, annual, quarterly, and sprint planning and progress/value realisation reporting
  • Managing the product backlog to ensure the product roadmap achieves the strategic objectives – contributing and adhering to DUAL’s standards for agile delivery tool adoption (i.e. MS Azure DevOps)
  • Representing your product(s) in the product sync activities with other product managers
  • Prioritising needs. Managing scope, budget, and time, weighing priorities and making trade-offs according to the needs and objectives of stakeholders
  • Performing a key role in sprint planning, you will propose how the product could be improved in the upcoming sprint based on stakeholder feedback. Working with the team to define a sprint goal, determine what backlog items to include in the sprint, and discuss how the team will complete the chosen work
  • Working throughout the sprint, you will work with the scrum master, developers, and testers to refine the product backlog items as needed
  • Running sprint retrospectives and capturing lessons learnt and deliverables for inclusion and prioritisation in the product backlog
  • Actively participating in the product owner chapter – ensuring DUAL builds a companywide product management capability
  • Understanding and anticipating your stakeholder’s needs to more effectively manage the product roadmap and product backlog
  • Use tools and methods like lean canvas, customer journey mapping, data modelling, and process models to understand the DUAL business better
  • Maintaining accountability for the final product, you will primarily inspect and evaluate product progress through each iteration. Gather feedback at the end of each iteration and adapt the product backlog based on that feedback
  • Demonstrating the delivery of value, guiding stakeholders in the implementation of the technology solution as part of a holistic people/process/technology/data solution
Our ideal teammate has experience and expertise in:
  • Commercially driven – you should understand DUAL’s value proposition, lead the team’s goal to grow exponentially in the speciality underwriting industry, and ensure other functions in the team understand how their efforts align to achieving the company vision
  • Experience in ensuring the product/solution delivery meets the company’s goals and that the value of delivery towards those goals is measured and released in increments
  • Experience in multiple areas across the insurance value chain (e.g. underwriting, operations, claims) and an understanding of different insurance classes of business (e.g. property, financial lines, professional indemnity) would be preferred but not essential
  • Effective budget management and prioritisation for both delivery and BAU of the product/solution – designing with continued product delivery being a key consideration
  • Experience with implementation feasibility and managing technology trade-offs – you will be a crucial contributor in evaluating technology options and provide a critical evaluation of options analysis to arrive at optimal design decisions
  • Able to consider non-functional requirements – you are responsible for providing business plans, metrics, and variables to input into the definition of NFRs – documenting them as requirements
  • Experience managing the product backlogs – ensure long-term planning and product definitions are in place to keep the delivery moving at pace
  • Help assess third-party suppliers and the ongoing product management of third-party provided solutions for DUAL.
  • You will stay current on the supplier landscape, support the evaluation and selection of suppliers, and align the technical capabilities across DUAL’s internal and supplier systems.
  • A team player who holds yourself and others accountable
  • Experience in delivering modern service architectures
What do we offer in return?
Yes, we offer all the usual rewards and benefits - including great healthcare provision, a wide variety of wellbeing offers, competitive salary, generous pensions and more - but we know you expect all that.
What you might not expect is a job where everyone has a voice, where volunteering in the community is part of the day job, and where everyone is encouraged to play a part towards our sustainability goals. We want people who want to make a difference - not just in the workplace, but in the industry and in the wider community.
Our culture: People First
Our core values dictate how we live and work. We are a group with independence and people at its heart and we are a home for talent with a unique culture: the biggest small company in the world
The focus on being a People First business has always been at the very heart of the Group; our vision was to create an independent business with a unique culture and one that would survive and thrive as a business controlled by the people working for it. And finding the most talented and entrepreneurial people to join the Group has been and will continue to be key.
Diversity & Inclusion
At DUAL we consider our people our chief competitive advantage and as such we treat colleagues, candidates, clients, and business partners with equality, fairness and respect, regardless of their age, disability, race, religion or belief, gender, sexual orientation, marital status or family circumstances.
Our Culture: People First
We’ve travelled far since opening our first office in 1994. Back then we were local experts – based in London, with direct access to the world’s biggest insurance market. We’re still locals, and we still deliver the right advice and the right insurance to our clients. But now, we’re local all over the world. With 15,000 global colleagues and a partner network spanning more than 100 territories, we are the largest independent insurance broker in the world. But our values haven’t changed since day one, when we set out to create a company grounded in:
  • An employee-ownership model
  • Aligned external investors
  • The trust and integrity born of friendship
  • Expertise
  • Independence
Our focus on being a people-first business has always been at the very heart of Howden. Our vision was to create an independent business with a unique culture; one that would survive and thrive as a business controlled by the people working for it. Our employee ownership model sets us apart in the market. It’s created a culture of collaboration and innovation, where we’re driven to think bigger and empowered to challenge convention.
Our flat structure and entrepreneurial spirit help us attract the best people and empower them to be the best version of themselves. And when we bring in and nurture great talent, more follows. That makes us better – and that’s better for everyone.
