Isaac Newton Trust Academic Career Development Fellowship in Philosophy (Part Time, Fixed Term)

The Faculty of Philosophy, together with Magdalene and Newnham Colleges seek to appoint an Isaac Newton Trust Career Development Fellow in Philosophy. The Fellowship is a new opportunity for exceptional scholars to contribute to both research and teaching within a Faculty and College environment, offering excellent preparation for applying for future academic appointments.

As an Isaac Newton Trust Academic Career Development Fellow, you will have an opportunity to:

• enjoy protected time for an independent research project;
• be embedded in a Faculty research and teaching culture;
• teach in Colleges in small groups;
• act as a College Director of Studies for students reading Philosophy;
• teach undergraduate and/or Masters students in a Faculty setting;
• be mentored by Faculty members in academic skills (teaching, research, publication, grant applications, academic administration).

Eligible candidates will be at an early stage of their career with typically less than three years’ experience post-PhD/equivalent, exclusive of any career breaks. The successful applicant will hold the degree of PhD or about to be awarded their PhD by the beginning of the appointment. As part of your application, you will submit a statement of the research project that you intend to pursue during the Fellowship and a sample of your research.

You will be able to demonstrate an ability to engage in high-level research and an enthusiasm for teaching at all levels. You will have the ability to balance competing priorities across the full range of Fellowship activities and to build effective relationships with students, academic and professional staff across the collegiate University.

The Fellowship will support and maintain the University’s national and international reputation for excellence in teaching and research. The Fellow will undertake a research project to be completed within the term of the Fellowship, and will be expected to publish in their field. The Fellow will also develop a portfolio of skills in teaching at undergraduate and taught postgraduate levels, including a mix of supervisions, seminars and lectures as part of their overall contribution to the Department. Through this, the Fellow contributes to the strength of research in relevant subject areas, and the delivery of teaching excellence in both Faculty and College settings.

The Fellowship is for a fixed term of three years with an expected starting date on or as soon after 1 September 2023 as possible. It is offered through three co-terminous appointments: a Faculty appointment at 70% FTE including the research component, and an appointment at each of the Colleges at 15% FTE each.
