Purpose of the role

We are currently looking for a qualified Highways Field Engineer to join the team based in Glasgow.

The purpose of the role is to undertake reactive and planned maintenance, installation, and commissioning works on highways control technology installations throughout Scotland. This includes CCTV, Traffic Monitoring Units, Variable Message Signs, Emergency Telephones and other in-station and out-station electronic and communications equipment, mainly motorway based.

About the role

  • Install, maintain and repair electrical, control and communications installations in accordance with current Regulations and Manufacturer’s recommendations. Response to urgent or emergency failures.
  • For candidates with electrical qualification, initial verification and periodic electrical testing and inspection to BS7671 of electrical installations, and issue of corresponding certification.
  • Updating schematic diagrams and as-built records.
  • Undertake all aspects of highway electrical maintenance works including routine and cyclic maintenance
  • Take responsibility for Health and Safety to keep yourself and others safe, and ensure compliance with relevant legislation
  • Responsibility for safe use, inspection and security of company issued vehicles and equipment
  • To keep records, complete all necessary paperwork, communicate and liaise with other employees of Amey, sub-contractors, the emergency services, the police, the general public, clients and customers
  • You will be required to take part in an on-call rota which includes weekends and nights. Extra allowances are available for this.

What are we looking for?

    • ONC/HNC in an electronic/electrical discipline, or strong vocational qualifications in the electrotechnical, instrumentation or telecommunications fields. Adequate experience in similar highways- electrical roles will also be considered.
    • Experience in a Field Installation and Servicing role
    • Able to follow and understand specifications relating to the installation and safety of electrical and/or communications infrastructure
    • Able to follow and understand electronic/communications systems architecture and functionality
    • Able to follow electrical schematic diagrams and install to specification.
    • Methodical approach to fault finding electrical and communications installations
    • Able to plan and organise own work with minimum supervision
    • Good communication skills both oral and written.
    • Self-motivated and proactive in delivering solutions
    • Computer literacy
    • Competent in the use of special tools & test equipment required to maintain, test & re-commission systems to specification.
    • Knowledge and understanding of Data, Voice and Video communications techniques and protocols, specially TCP/IP based.
    • Electrical qualification or Inspection and Test qualification to 18th Edition of BS7671 would be desirable
    • Knowledge and understanding of personal health and safety, Risk Assessment process and safe systems of work
    • Full UK Driving Licence
    • Experience working on highways is preferred but not essential
