Position:Head Projectionist and Site Manager

Rate of pay:£11p/h (up to 36 hours a week). Equivalent to £23k per year pro rata (£20,600 gross annual)

Contract:Part time role (Permanent)

The Ultimate Picture Palace is Oxford’s oldest and only independent cinema. Situated in the heart of East Oxford, our iconic cinema has been treasured by generations of Oxford residents, students and tourists.

We are seeking a dedicated and organised Head Projectionist and Site Manager to coordinate all Technical and maintenance aspects of our historic cinema, as well as duty manage on regular shifts.

The post holder will be responsible for

• Coordinating the smooth daily running of all cinema operations and visitor services
• Securing delivery of films and organise weekly ingesting/uploading, previewing and screening
• Managing bar including ordering stock, displaying products and stock checks
• Coordinating the annual building maintenance checks, including PA and AV equipment

Most of our films are now projected digitally, but we also use a 35mm projector for some classic screenings.

Principal Responsibilities

Projection Room

• Receive and prepare incoming films, whether by satellite or courier, on digital cinema server systems including video, DVD and other materials and formats
• Technical presentation of films, monitoring sound levels and picture quality on a weekly basis;
• Ensure the weekly activities are carried out to present films on time and with minimum disruption / down time, as directed by the weekly/daily film schedule with the full understanding of the Box office software (Savoy’s BackOffice)
• Maintain all cinema and associated equipment, incl. digital projector, to provide quality film presentation in conjunction with the projection maintenance contractor and to take any preventative steps to remedy possible breakdown following the training guidelines that have been supplied;
• Keep the projection room clean, tidy and safe
• Making up, previewing, screening and breaking down 35mm film when required

Front of house

• Undertake cinema opening, set up and closing requirements whilst on shift to ensure screenings can start promptly including taking responsibility for cash and stock control, setting up the box office system, welcoming volunteers before their shift;
• Deliver high levels of customer care at all times ensuring the highest possible standards when selling tickets using box office system, serving in the auditorium bar, answering customer queries and swiftly resolving issues (in-person, by telephone or by email);
• Supervise and work closely with volunteers and other members of staff during a shift to manage queues and ensuring that all public areas operate in a way that is safe and accessible to all customers;
• Ensure the appearance of all front of house areas are maintained to the highest standards and that deliveries are dealt with swiftly and stock stored correctly;
• Be responsible for health, safety and hygiene standards including COVID safe measures at all times when on duty including the evacuation of staff and public in the event of an emergency.

Building Management

• Ordering bar stock, and conducting stock checks;
• Test fire alarm systems, identify hazards and ensure cinema complies with all health and safety standards on a regular basis in line and participate in quarterly Health and Safety Meetings to review risk assessments, procedures and Emergency Plan;
• Undertake general maintenance tasks, ad hoc repairs and front-line maintenance, and liaise with service providers and maintenance workers as appropriate;
• Alert Executive Director about any projection/building maintenance issues
