We are currently looking for a Head of Production to join our Rolling Stock business in Lincoln. Our teams of talented engineers are enhancing the safety of the UK railways ensuring that all of our passenger trains meet safety requirements across the UK and you could be part of it. You will lead our team of Production Managers and supervisors to overhaul bogies and wheelsets in line with customer demand.

Reporting to the Bogie Service Centre Manager, you will be responsible for the successful operational performance and efficiency of the factory ensuring that resourcing requirements are met, robust operating procedures are in place, employees are engaged, and the health and safety environment is continually maintained and improved. You will develop and drive operational improvement projects that will improve productivity and implement any changes/modifications as agreed with the customer/internal stakeholders. You will be responsible for day-to-day output of overhauled bogies and wheelsets together with associated components and accountable for production budgetary control.

This role offers an excellent opportunity for an experienced Engineering / Operations Manager who wants to be part of an innovative, fast moving business in the centre of the UK railway industry.

You will:

  • Establish, develop and monitor the delivery of the short, medium and long term production plan
  • Interact with support functions and key suppliers to ensure on time delivery of material and services
  • Oversee the short term production plans to ensure that changes, driven by customer or technical requirements, can be incorporated
  • Develop strong customer relationships at senior management ‘Fleet Performance’ level, understanding customer needs and anticipating emerging customer requirements
  • To investigate, resolve and respond to customer complaints within the factory
  • As part of the factory management team, responsible for the production delivery to targets
  • Deliver reliability improvements to agreed annual targets
  • Develop and implement employee technical and non technical development plans to support and enhance business capability and employee career aspirations
  • Be responsible for Apprentices participating in the Apprenticeship programme within area of responsibility
  • Develop a high performance culture with strong employee engagement and ensuring the effective use of the Siemens People Management policies and tools within your team
  • Use Lean and continuous improvement methodologies, identify opportunities for improvement and efficiency within the business, scoping and delivering a range of continuous improvement projects as agreed with line manager
  • Be accountable to the Bogie Service Centre Manager for budgetary control of production team labour and other allocated responsibilities
  • Support the budget setting process, including short to medium-range objectives and criteria for monitoring progress and measuring success

  • Ensure a Health & Safety culture in own area of responsibility and embed understanding across employees
  • Monitor and manage health and safety statistics and targets within the depot
  • Understand and implement Siemens safety systems and controls within your area of responsibility in line with Rail Systems HSQE Company policies

The candidate

Someone with/who:

Essential:

  • Minimum HND or above qualification in a production management or engineering environment or equivalent experience
  • Experience of managing and engaging technical teams to deliver results within a time-critical operation
  • Experience of managing change and employee relations
  • Knowledge of continuous improvement techniques and experience of implementing change projects in an engineering environment
  • Good understanding of health and safety legislation, can demonstrate implementation of health and safety procedures in safety critical environments
  • Strong analytical skills and numerate, comfortable with the review and development of management information
  • IT literate – can develop and interpret spreadsheets

Preferred:

  • Experience within a Rail environment with technical engineering knowledge relating to Rolling Stock
  • Degree level education in an engineering environment
  • Professional membership of a Leadership or Engineering Institute or Body (ILM, IMechE, IET)
  • Basic understanding or entry-level qualification in project management
