The Parliamentary Security Department (PSD) is responsible for physical and personnel security across both Houses of Parliament and provides support to Members and staff when away from the Estate. Its purpose is to keep Parliament safe and open for business. PSD sets security strategy, provides expert advice and delivers an operational service. It does this in partnership with the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) and by working closely with the In-House and Strategic Estates teams, Serjeant at Arms and Black Rod’s office, the Restoration & Renewal (R&R) programme, the Parliamentary Digital Service, and other key stakeholders.

The Role

Sitting within the Parliamentary Security Department, the Members Security Support Service (MSSS) is responsible for delivering a range of security services to Members of both Houses of Parliament and the staff that support them. Reporting to the Deputy Director of Security (People), the role of the Head of MSSS is a broad and fascinating one, managing and developing the two teams in MSSS and taking responsibility for the development and creation of a risk informed mechanism that provides a range of comprehensive and flexible security mitigations for the Members. You will lead on the delivery of new security contracts as they relate to physical security measures and build effective relationships the Parliamentary Liaison and Investigation Team (PLaIT), CPNI and NaCTSO on Members’ security issues and for the ongoing review of the set of security measures.

The Person

The successful candidate will have the following demonstrable skills and experience -

  • Experience of working in a security-related discipline, allied with an in-depth knowledge of physical or personal security principles and the ability to deliver risk-based and threat informed mitigations.
  • Ability to lead, develop and motivate a small team, ensuring that resources are properly and effectively managed, whilst upholding the values of equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • Excellent people skills including excellent written and verbal communication with experience of influencing, persuading and advising stakeholders at all levels, such as Members or other senior managers.
  • Ability to implement and manage change, development and improvements – addressing concerns and overcoming resistance.
  • Ability to solve complex problems, think creatively and exercise sound judgement when considering a range of people issues.
  • High levels of discretion and the ability to deal appropriately with highly sensitive information.
