1. Job Purpose

Birmingham Ceremonies is the production company appointed to deliver the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, the largest multi-sport event to be held in England in the last 10 years.

Birmingham Ceremonies is recruiting for a Head of Legal and Procurement to manage the sourcing and contracting of suppliers, managing legal risk and generally providing sound legal advice to the executive team on legal and procurement matters arising in relation to both Ceremonies.

This role is based in Birmingham and will suit someone with a proven track record in providing pragmatic and efficient legal and procurement support to international live events, ceremonies and shows.

The ideal candidate will be self-motivated with excellent legal and commercial skills. A passion for and experience in live events is essential.

2. Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Providing legal advice to the Ceremonies Senior Leadership Team
  • Ensuring compliance by Birmingham Ceremonies with its legal obligations
  • Working with all departments within Birmingham Ceremonies to identify procurement requirements and, thereafter, managing the procurement process until contract award
  • Drafting, reviewing and negotiating legal agreements for the Ceremonies, including:
  • Workforce contracts
  • Supplier agreements
  • Headline talent agreements
  • Music and composer agreements
  • Performer agreements
  • Performing rights agreements
  • Ensuring that suitable contracts are negotiated and placed with suppliers, minimising risk and protecting the commercial interests of Birmingham Ceremonies
  • Acting as the main legal and procurement point of contact with the Birmingham 2022 Organising Committee and any other stakeholders
  • Providing reasonable support in ensuring relevant insurance requirements are contracted and met for the delivery of the Ceremonies.
  • Ensuring proper rights clearances and compliance with copyright laws for all ceremonies related music, imagery and other intellectual property.
  • Maintaining ongoing contract and procurement registers.

3a) Skills and experience required

Skills & Ability

· UK Qualified Solicitor

· Excellent drafting, administrative and organisational skills (MS Office skills are essential for this role)

· Strong written and verbal communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills

  • Accuracy and meticulous attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work to a variety of deadlines
  • Excellent stakeholder management experience and approach
  • Collaborative and personable – someone who will build relationships easily
  • Energetic and dynamic individual with high level organisational skills, and an attention to detail with a focus on delivery
  • Resilient with an effective approach to resolving challenges and identifying solutions
  • Ability to build relationships, with speed and credibility, with people at all levels (internal or external)
  • Confident in handling complex budgets and working within stringent procurement processes/reporting
  • Experience in a similar capacity for a theatre production or events company
  • Experience in live events

Knowledge and Experience

  • Proven effectiveness in working on previous events or projects of a similar scale – ideally on International projects
  • Experienced in budget management
  • Experienced in working within a multi- stakeholder environment
  • Familiar with Birmingham – the city the people, and the Arts and Cultural institutions and establishments

Qualifications

  • Educated to A Level or equivalent
  • Degree or equivalent in a related discipline
