Head of Exhibitions and Collection Care
OVERALL PURPOSE AND ROLE

The Head of Exhibitions and Collection Care will be responsible for all aspects of managing and delivering the programme of temporary exhibitions and displays. The role is also responsible for leading, establishing, implementing and maintaining the highest standards of best practice for conservation, documentation, Collection Care and Collections Management procedures in all areas across the Collection. The role also manages the loans out programme from the Collection.

Leading the Exhibition and Displays and Collection Care departments you will provide strategic vision as well as practical and hands-on co-ordination.

You will need to have a flexible, pragmatic approach to work, be a keen problem solver, and be proactive and confident working with colleagues across all levels of the institution. You will have excellent planning and organisational skills with the ability to work to tight deadlines, build and manage specialist teams, along with freelancers and resources, and prioritize correctly and in line with the wider goals of the Wallace Collection.

You will need a commitment to driving change and ensuring continued improvement as the post holder will be required to shape this new role as the position and department develops.

RESPONSIBILITIES
EXHIBITIONS AND DISPLAYS
  • Work closely with the Director to provide strategic management of the exhibition programme
  • Set financial targets and performance projections
  • Arrange and chair Exhibition Committee meetings
  • Build multidisciplinary design teams, championing and setting a very high standard for design across all exhibitions and displays activity to create world-class experiences for our audiences
  • Schedule and oversee all aspects of the programme of temporary exhibitions and displays, including:
o Leading and motivating cross-departmental exhibition project teams, to create inspiring exhibitions on schedule and on budget, collaborating with Curatorial, Learning and Retail
o Overseeing all exhibitions interpretation and design choices, working closely with the Curatorial and Communications Departments and the Director
o Managing all aspects of exhibitions and displays (loans in, oversees tenders, build, interpretation, etc.) and ensuring smooth installation and de-installations
o Overseeing the work of external contractors and consultants such as exhibition designers, graphic designers/contractors, exhibition fit out contractors, quantity surveyors
o Writing and negotiating all exhibition procurement and multi-venue contracts, catalogue contracts and curator contracts

  • Ensure a ‘visitor first’ approach is integrated throughout all project stages
  • Oversee the production of exhibition catalogues, collaborating with Curatorial, Communications and Retail departments
  • Lead and line manage the Exhibitions and Displays Team to deliver all exhibitions and displays activity
  • Is responsible for Known Consignor Status annual application and upkeep of standards, including training of all relevant staff
  • Is responsible for NIRU status and Customs and Excise records
  • Is responsible for overseeing Due Diligence Policy and maintenance of all records associated with Approved Status for Immunity from Seizure
  • Stay informed with current policy and emerging disciplines across the sector via Continued Professional Development and networks

COLLECTION CARE
  • Plan and deliver conservation activity for the Collection including interventive and preventive programmes, to ensure plans and requirements are met within time and budget and to an appropriate level
  • Represent Collection Care best practice and appropriate levels of care for special projects, to manage or advise on delivery of conservation or collection move elements of special projects
  • Establish, implement and maintain object move and object access best practice and procedure across the Collection
  • Serve as the Museum’s lead user for the Collections Management System (CMS) currently MuseumPlus
  • Oversee the successful resolution of any documentation and cataloguing backlog projects across the entire Collection
  • Audit and rationalise current storage arrangements
  • Work with Masterplan and Curatorial colleagues concerning the technical aspects of object handling and display requirements for works from the Collection due for re-display or major temporary Exhibitions, or gallery refurbishment projects
  • Is responsible for establishing, implementing and maintaining the highest standards of best practice in Collections Care and documentation across the museum; ensuring The Accreditation Standard and The SPECTRUM Standard are met, in line with The Wallace Collection’s Collection Care and Documentation Policies
  • Oversee all Registrar duties for loans in and out from the Collection
  • Lead and line manage Collection Care team to deliver the above activity

GENERAL
  • Prepare, monitor and manage budgets, reporting to SMT at regular intervals to keep management up to date with expenditure
  • Ensure you and your teams keep all internal procedures and documents up to date, and are compliant with all relevant legislation, including CDM, Equality Act, Health & Safety
  • Uphold the highest standards when representing the Wallace Collection, and liaise with external committees as necessary on the Collection’s behalf
