The Opportunity

We have an exciting opportunity for a Head of Estimating within our Energy Water Pre-construction division.

This role is a key part of the business as the balance moves from competitive bidding to two stage delivery strategies. It will be highly influential and central to strategic development of the estimating business function at this exciting time of rapid growth

The Role

As The Head of Estimating, you will:

  • Manage multidisciplinary infrastructure tenders from conception through to completion, delivering tenders that meet project and business requirements.
  • Have oversight of the pricing and be involved with the commercial strategy to secure work through competitive, ECI, two stage and allocated tender processes.
  • Ensure alignment with governance directives, keeping senior management informed and briefed on progress and emerging risks
  • Be wholly responsible and accountable for strong competitive tender commercial proposals and establishing robust but compelling ECI pricing via virtual management of pricing activity embedded through the wider business.
  • Manage and allocate the estimating resources and its people development to maintain a strong estimating function
  • Maintain succession plan
  • Show leadership, collaboration and teamwork to engage the estimating function and wider work winning functions, sharing knowledge and best practice.
  • Develop Strategies with procurement to ensure we achieve the most competitive quotes by understanding current market trends
  • Identify and report on risk and opportunity at tender settlement.
  • Prepare accurate and competitive estimates and cost plans
Requirements

  • Previous experience in a similar role or with the ambition to step up into this role
  • Experience within Civil Infrastructure is essential; Power or Water experience is preferable but not a must
  • Qualified to professional status and educated to degree status preferable; HNC standard as a minimum, ideally a Chartered Engineer
  • Ability to take-off quantities and price work from first principles
  • Advanced in using typical estimating software packages
  • Cost planning knowledge and experience
  • An understanding of construction technology, resourcing and construction methods / outputs. Qualified to HNC standard as a minimum, ideally a Chartered Engineer
  • Ability to take-off quantities and price work from first principles

  • Cost planning knowledge and experience
  • Ability to lead a team across a business unit or area
  • Good management skills with the ability to motivate employees to achieve high standards of compliance
  • Excellent organisational, planning and time management skills; able to manage projects simultaneously with compromising on standards and quality
  • Ability to work with senior management to set project and operational targets
  • Excellent negotiation and diplomacy skills and the ability to make a sound business case to senior stakeholders
