About Shelter A home is a fundamental human need, as essential as education or healthcare. Yet millions of people across Britain struggle on a daily basis with homelessness, bad housing conditions, soaring rents, discrimination and the threat of eviction. So, we are striving for change, with individuals, in communities, across society, and leading the way to a safe home. We need ambitious, best-in-class individuals who are passionate about our cause to join us at this exciting time. This is your chance to play a part in the fundamental change we are striving to achieve. At Shelter we are united by our purpose to defend the right to a safe home. Our enemy is the social injustice at the core of the escalating housing emergency. We believe that to win that fight, we must be representative of the people we are here to help and those who support our movement for change. In all our people decisions, we take pride in being inclusive, fair, equitable and transparent. We have committed to combat racism both within and outside Shelter and welcome you on our journey to becoming a truly anti-racist organisation. About the team Our involvement team ensures that the views of those affected by the housing emergency underpins and influences what we do by providing a range of opportunities for people with lived experience to shape the ongoing design, delivery and governance of our work. One such opportunity is the GROW (Getting Real Opportunities of Work) Programme. It provides 12-18 months training and employment opportunities for people with lived experience of homelessness, mental health or addiction, or a history of offending. Placements include a range of support, learning and development and access to a personal budget which can be spent on training, wellbeing, education and/or coaching. About the role Responsible for co-ordinating the GROW programme across Shelter, you’ll ensure that each Trainee receives a high-quality traineeship and that the structures and resources required to facilitate traineeships are in place. We’ll also look to you to further expand GROW across Shelter and identify new opportunities for GROW placements. Promoting the programme externally to partners, funders and other audiences, with activity aimed to raise awareness of the value of employing people with lived experience and encourage more organisations to adopt the approach, will be important too. And, when it comes to maintaining the GROW Framework and associated policies and procedures to ensure they support inclusion and pathways for people with lived experience into employment, again, we’ll count on you. Developing and maintaining learning pathways for Trainees, ensuring appropriate wellbeing and development support and a suite of resources and training materials are in place and line managing two GROW Involvement Officers – these are just some aspects of this interesting, varied and vital role. We are happy to talk about flexible working, personal growth, and to promote a workplace where you can be yourself and achieve success based only on your merit. About you As well as an interest in, and understanding of, how homelessness and housing issues can affect people’s lives, you’ll need a proven ability to co-ordinate or manage projects and develop plans in a related environment. You’ll also need some people management experience and the interpersonal skills it takes to encourage, promote and support the involvement of people with lived experience in the design and delivery of our work. Used to giving presentations and communicating information to a range of audiences, including writing reports, developing relationships within a large organisation and with external agencies, funders and other professionals comes naturally to you. What’s more, you’re proficient in the use of case management systems and Microsoft Office applications and participating in online meetings. Applicants with lived experience of homelessness or poor housing are particularly encouraged to apply for this role.
