Group Data and Controls Accountant

About The Role

Base Location: Perth/Glasgow

Salary: £39,400-£59,000 + performance-related bonus + a range of other benefits to support your family, finances and wellbeing.

As Group Data and Controls Accountant, you will work as a key member of the Internal reporting team whose main responsibility is for the Group’s consolidated management reporting to SSE’s Board and Group Executive Committee and for setting the Group’s internal reporting policies and requirements. This includes ownership of SSE’s policies on financial data and reporting as well as the ongoing management and governance of reporting structures and hierarchies used across the group. As part of the team, you will be responsible for actively managing the structures and governance around the Chart of Accounts, approvals, journals, intercompany process, reporting hierarchies, and other controls which would be expected of a plc company of SSE’s scale. In addition, you will be responsible for the governance around key Group reporting controls. This important role offers the holder excellent insight into the workings of a listed plc and requires liaison with Finance colleagues across SSE’s businesses. The post will require you to work closely with senior colleagues including the Group Finance Director and Director of Group Reporting and will report to the Group Internal Reporting Manager.
  • Reporting structures & hierarchies governance
The primary responsibility of the role will be the ongoing management and governance of SSE’s Group reporting principles, definitions, structures & hierarchies. This will involve operational ownership of relevant policies and internally published structures. This requires governance in line with Group’s evolving operating model and will involve working closely with the Group’s business units on requirements. Key will be ensuring that the consistency, relevance and adherence to SSE’s data and reporting policies with appropriate change management and controls in place.
  • Nominated Group SME for change activity
Dedicated group lead/controller for SSE’s financial data and reporting structures which will involve delivering the implementation of new controls and processes around chart of accounts structures and definitions, change process (e.g. new companies), journals, inter-company balance sheet controls, period end and change management around reporting metrics amongst others arising from SSE’s strategic Finance Transformation project.
  • Chart of Accounts and data analytics
Responsible for governance process associated with chart of accounts change management including the CoA and acting as chair on relevant internal change management and governance forums. In particular, the role holder will require to consider SSE’s broader Data and Reporting strategies and work with SSE’s Finance Transformation team in relation to reporting design and data capture from a Group perspective. The role holder requires to work closely with SSE’s Finance Systems team to ensure appropriate management and control in relation to structures and chart of accounts data.
  • Management of Internal Control policies
The role holder will be responsible for maintenance and governance of SSE Group documentation and policies in relation to ‘record to report’ processes such as month end process, journal approvals, balance sheet reconciliations and so on and similar in relation to planning and budgeting. This is a key output of SSE’s Finance Transformation project.
  • Support to Group Reporting activity
From time to time, the role holder will require to initiate and support CI change projects in Group Reporting and support report production and other aspects of the function’s wider

What do I need?

To be considered for this role, we would love you to be:
  • Fully qualified Chartered Accountant with 3+ years Post Qualified Experience in a Financial Reporting or External Audit role, ideally with plc or relevant industry experience;
  • Experience of listed plc reporting and corporate governance requirements would be advantageous;
  • Experience in Chart of Accounts design and management desirable;
  • Experience of consolidated reporting including Group FP&A again advantageous;
  • Continuous improvement approach focusing on process efficiency;
  • Ability to manage competing deadlines and deliverables; and
  • Personal resilience and drive are essential.
