Job content

You’ll be doing 6 placements across different areas of the business: Business Development, Finance, Operations, and Marketing. Each will last for 6 months, so you’ll get a good angle on what’s involved, and where you would like your career to go.

This will also enable you and the business to see if you have any untapped talents. A previous graduate went into the business wanting to work in Marketing. But she is now excelling in Operations.

The placements themselves vary from year-to-year, depending on business needs. There may even be some travel involved: previous graduates have done a placement in Canada or Germany; and another helped to set up a new office in Dublin. There will also be some travel when in the job.

Once you’ve completed the placements you will have:

  • A thorough understanding of business finance;
  • International business experience (EU, North America, and Emerging Markets);
  • Experience with implementing Marketing and Business Development plans;
  • Experience in Operations –working fast and decisively under pressure;
  • Expertise in all aspects of commodity markets.

The business operates in the fuel sector, offering a range of services from specialist trading and fuel supply, to professional advisory and consultancy services. They are regularly asked to appear on mainstream media platforms to discuss commodity markets and energy developments. You’ll be able to tell people ‘I work there’; and who knows, one day it may even be you on the screen.

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT…

The business has taken on and developed many graduates, so they know exactly what to do.

There’s an in-house training coordinator who is responsible for structuring your personal development. There is also a dedicated external performance coach.

They will work with you to identify a path for career development, so that by the end of the three years you will be in an informed position to decide your next managerial steps within the business.

There may even be opportunities for further studies or workplace development as you progress.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED…

While a Business related degree would be the closest match, there is flexibility in degree type; two previous successful graduates studied Maths and History. And after all, the degree you chose at 17 or 18 does not always turn out to be the closest match in term of career choice. Things change.

As long as you have great communication skills, positivity, organisational skills, and are looking to work in business, then this is a good match.

WHAT YOU’LL GET…

In addition to a salary of £24,000-26,000 there is a Profitshare bonus; so if the business does well then you could get a nice bit extra.

WHERE YOU’LL DO IT…

York city centre, where you will be working in a team of 40, including others who started as graduates, some as recently as last year. It’s a lively and fast-paced environment.

It’s preferred that you are already based locally, or if you do need to relocate that you have connections in the area. If you need to relocate please consider if this will be feasible.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO NEXT…

Send your cv asap. Make sure that you have included anything relevant that you have done. If you look a good match then we will speak more about the role and business, and how it may match what you are looking for.
