About the role

ISIS Neutron and Muon Source is the world’s most productive spallation neutron source — providing beams of neutrons and muons to enable scientists to study the structure and properties of matter for the benefit of science and engineering in the UK and abroad. We are currently looking to recruit a general worker to work in the Experimental Operations Division as part of the Instrument Operations Group.

Within this role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Help maintain our experimental halls to a high standard.
  • Stock take and replenish lab and workshop items.
  • Collect and deliver valuable technical equipment around site and to and from other institutes using STFC lab vehicles when needed.
  • Collect deliveries from our central stores daily and distribute parcels to the relevant team members.
  • Take ownership for gas cylinder stations, their up-keep and changing cylinders throughout the day. Ensure cylinders of gas are ordered to replenish stock used, also supplied for specific experiments along with suitable regulator when required.
  • Support ISIS technicians, scientists and visitors with ad hoc requests, such as ensuring safety barriers are delivered and set up in a specific area, or specific experimental waste is removed and passed to the responsible teams.
  • Assist with setting up and dismantling exhibitions for open days and events on and off site.
  • Ensure group vehicles are kept clean, tidy and that weekly checks are carried out to report any concerns and ensure those concerns are addressed.

We will provide you with training where required, and we will help to support your learning and development in this role.

About you

We are looking for someone with excellent verbal communication skills with a good basic computer knowledge. You be educated to GCSE level, or equivalent, and you must hold a UK driving license. Previous experience gained in a laboratory setting or engineering environment would be beneficial, in addition to an awareness of Health and Safety good working practice in a lab/workshop environment. You will be a hardworking teammate, a good listener with a can-do demeanour. We are looking for someone who is self-motivated and willing to help out and go above and beyond. You will be well organised with the ability to manage your own workload.

Person Specification

Shortlisting Criteria

Essential:

  • Educated to GCSE level, with a minimum of 4 GCSE’s at C grade or above, or equivalent.
  • Good written communication skills.
  • UK Driving license
  • Computer Literate with experience in Microsoft Office Programmes.

Desirable:

  • Experience of working in a laboratory setting or engineering environment would be an advantage.

Interview Criteria

Essential:

  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Able to use computerised procurement systems.
  • Ability to manage your own time.
  • Good Health and Safety awareness.
  • Reasonable level of mechanical ability to perform tasks in the experimental halls and checks on vehicles.
  • Proficient in the use of computers and programmes such as email, spreadsheets and Microsoft Word.
