Cheddar Gorge and Caves is seeking multiple motivated and knowledgeable part-time General Assistants to join our team this Easter and help us continue our tradition of hiring engaged and productive employees.

Reporting to the Assistant Operations Manager, your role is pivotal as the initial point of contact for our guests. You will adeptly provide accurate information about available activities, all the while maintaining a clean and safe environment for guests, visitors, and colleagues. The nature of the work is diverse, encompassing both routine tasks and the ability to respond promptly to evolving situations. Your responsibilities span across the three operational departments at Cheddar, involving operations, retail (Gift Shop), and Food & Beverage (Café).

Key Duties Will Include

  • To provide at all times the highest standard of service to customers in a polite, courteous and helpful manner.
  • To ensure the highest standards of presentation and cleanliness throughout the premises.
  • To have a good knowledge of Cheddar Gorge and Caves, its attractions and history.
  • To provide guided tours and interpretation in the Caves and the Museum including fire lighting and flint knapping.
  • To understand and have the ability to deliver food service safety compliance to the requirements of the Longleat food corporate policy.
  • To assist with the rotation of stock, reporting any short-dated lines to the retail office.
  • To operate the tills and be responsible for the security and accounting of all amounts of money handled during transactions in line with the cash handling procedure.

About You

  • Self-motivated with excellent customer service skills
  • Experience of providing tours or sharing verbal information with groups of people
  • Experience of communicating with the general public.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to work outside in all weathers
  • Knowledge of pre–history, geology, Victorian history
  • Experience of till operation

Your contract

You will be on a fixed term contract ending 3rd January 2025, working a minimum of 14 hours per week, with working hours to vary over a 7 day rota basis, including weekends, evenings and bank holidays as required. The earliest start time is 8am, and the latest finish time is 8pm, varying in accordance with opening times. Positions available from the end of March.
