After more than 60 years away from Formula One, Aston Martin returned to the grid in 2021. Based in Northamptonshire, Aston Martin Aramco Cognizant Formula One™ Team has more than 700 passionate people at its heart, making a team with both a rich heritage and a fresh perspective – bringing new energy to the sport with a determination to shake up the order and compete at the sharp end. The Aston Martin era represents the beginning of a new journey for us, but the racer’s attitude and can-do approach remain central pillars in the team’s philosophy. The focus is always on improving performance and delivering results. With fresh investment and energy, the stage is set to build on Aston Martin’s rich history in motorsport and establish Aston Martin Aramco Cognizant Formula One™ Team as a competitive force in the years ahead. To help us make our ambitious plans in Formula One a reality, we are entering into a works partnership with Honda, which will see the Japanese manufacturer supply us with power units from 2026. The partnership will allow us to exploit every single area of our technical package and we are looking for talented, passionate and driven individuals to design, test and develop cutting-edge F1 transmission and hydraulic systems. With that in mind, an exciting opportunity exists for a Gearbox Control Systems Engineer The successful candidate will have experience of modelling, calibrating, and testing Formula One seamless shift geartrains and associated hydraulic systems and components. The role will involve developing the gearbox system model to run in both SIL and HIL environments and running simulations with the gearbox control strategy to optimise the gearshift calibration. This knowledge will then be applied during gearbox testing in the test cell and powertrain dyno to maximise gearbox performance and reliability. The role will also involve the development and optimisation of the other hydraulic control systems on the car, such as differential, brake-by-wire system, clutch control and other on-car systems. Responsibilities
  • Development of electronic control systems for on-car use, HIL simulator, DIL simulator and test facilities.
  • Develop the gearbox shift calibration strategies on the HIL, gearbox test cell, dyno, and track.
  • Development of models of the powertrain for use in SIL and HIL environments.
  • Ownership of control systems projects, from specification, through to implementation, testing, delivery, and maintenance.
  • Development and management of ECU calibrations, set up and projects
  • Development of software/tools for the configuration, calibration, data monitoring/analysis and performance optimisation of the electronic control and data systems.
  • Provide development support for the standard ECU software and calibration to achieve optimal car performance.
  • Investigate control systems issues using telemetry, HIL and SIL tools and provide feedback on the resolution to the appropriate project owners.
  • Development of HIL simulations and associated plant models to provide improved coverage of systems testing and calibration.
  • Development of coding standards and systems engineering development methodologies.
  • Provide factory and possibly track support for race and test events for the operation of the control systems when necessary. Requirements
  • Good degree in a relevant engineering discipline (electronics, mechanical, automotive, mechatronics).
  • Experience with McLaren Applied tools and embedded software is essential; SECU, ATLAS , System Monitor
  • Proven track record of developing real-time control system software using Matlab Simulink/Stateflow/autocoding tools is essential.
  • Knowledge of F1 control systems including seamless shift gearbox calibration, brake-by-wire, differential control.
  • Experience of the modelling/simulation of electronic control systems with mechanical/hydraulic/electrical elements.
  • Strong mathematical/analytical skills and control theory knowledge.
  • Experience of gearbox and powertrain testing
  • Experience with hardware in the loop simulators; dSPACE Scalexio, Control Desk, etc.
  • Knowledge of the configuration and operation of high-speed data acquisition and analysis systems.
  • Data-driven approach to problem solving.
  • Flexible attitude and ability to work as part of a team in a changing environment.
  • Experience with F1 or top-level motorsport control systems is ideal. The role will be based in Silverstone. Aston Martin Formula One Team is committed to attracting, recruiting and retaining the most talented individuals, regardless of age, disability, gender identity, gender expression, gender reassignment, marital or civil partnership status, pregnancy or maternity, race, religion, belief, sex or sexual orientation. We strive to be a Team that reflects all the communities with which we engage around the world through diversity in the workplace and promoting an inclusive culture in which all team members are respected, empowered and valued.
