Its exciting times in the medical workforce team at UHSussex. With a new Head of Medical Workforce recently appointed, we are completing the final recruitment for our new structure, this will enable us to deliver a great medical workforce service for our population of over 2,300 medics.

We are looking for an experienced senior medical staffing professional to join us as medical workforce manager. Joining two experienced medical workforce managers, you will initially take the lead on pay and contracts, working closely with the existing team to act as a trouble shooter to resolve pay related issues. You will also partner with specific areas of the Trust to provide exert medical staffing advice and act as a contact for our Chiefs of Service and Clinical Directors within the respective divisions.

In the medium to longer term the post holder will likely take a broader scope of responsibility as our medical workforce services and structures develop, flexibility is therefore an important element of the role.

To succeed you will need an excellent understanding of medical terms and conditions and be comfortable working in partnership with the payroll team, medical leaders, and unions. Outstanding customer service and relationship management skills are a pre-requisite, as are strong verbal and written communication skills and a methodological systematic approach.

To be operationally responsible for the delivery of an effective, customer centric medical workforce service that meets the needs of doctors, patients, and managers.

The post holder will take the lead on pay and contracts, working closely with the existing team to act as a trouble shooter to resolve pay related issues. This work will require highly developed specialist knowledge of medical pay and terms and conditions.

A key part of the role will be supporting process improvement, improving quality, and ensuring that lessons are learnt where required. In the medium to longer term the post holder will likely take a broader scope of responsibility as our medical workforce services and structures develop, flexibility is therefore an important element of the role. The JD reflects this, and the focus of the role may change, albeit will continue to be responsible for medical staffing and work within the medical workforce department.

The role will be responsible for maintaining excellent relationships with the payroll team, medical leaders, and unions.

Developing local strategies to manage complex medical terms and conditions.

  • Resolving highly complex and sensitive pay related cases, acting as senior point of escalation.
  • Maintain good working relationships with the British Medical Association and other relevant external bodies.
  • Work closely with the NHS Sussex payroll hub to ensure prompt resolution of pay related issues.
  • Take responsibility for the quality assurance and audit within the medical workforce department.
  • Building relationships with NHS Employers and other networks to maintain an excellent understanding of current and developing medical workforce practice and terms and conditions.
  • Working with the Medical Workforce Team, promote continuous improvement of medical staffing processes with a specific focus on pay related issues, ensuring effective stakeholder engagement.
  • Deliver coaching and training to develop internal capacity and knowledge of medical terms and conditions and pay.
  • Operationally manage the application of the 2016 Doctors and Dentists in Training contract, ensuring that processes are in place to issue accurate contracts to the relevant staff group in line with best practice and good governance.
  • Manage highly sensitive and potentially controversial matters with discretion and professionalism for example pay related issues.
  • Provide support to HR Business Partners as required and act as a senior advisor on on pay related and other medical staffing matters.
  • Use BI systems and processes to help inform effective management of the medical workforce.
  • Support the Head of Medical Workforce to ensure that comprehensive information about the medical workforce is accessible, accurate and responds to service, legal and external requirements.
  • Ensure that HR colleagues are educated, informed and involved in medical workforce strategy/ development projects and work streams as appropriate.
  • Support medical workforce projects, adopting a project management approach to the design, development, implementation and evaluation of change.
  • Provide management of the trainee doctor contract, advising on the design of rotas to ensure they are compliant with the 2016 terms and conditions and EWTD requirements.
