We’re looking for an exceptional Foundation Scientist - Nowcasting R&D to help us make a difference to our planet.

Our Foundation Scientist - Nowcasting R&D can work either in our HQ at Exeter or at home (in the UK) with ad-hoc attendance in Exeter required at least once a month. We welcome applicants who wish to work full-time or part-time (more than 60% of full time equivalent).

As our Foundation Scientist - Nowcasting R&D, your starting salary will be £24146.00 and you will have opportunities to progress to £26641.00 over time. New joiners to the Met Office will start on the salary band minima.

Your total reward package is potentially worth up to £34,000 annually, which includes basic salary, potential corporate bonus and employer pension contributions.

Job Purpose

The Nowcasting R&D team is part of the Space Applications and Nowcasting Strategic Area at the Met Office. Our aim is to improve our forecasts and warnings for a few hours ahead to help people stay safe and thrive when the weather is least predictable. To do this, we use statistical methods and meteorological insight to build and improve on our nowcasting systems. Our Foundation Scientist - Nowcasting R&D will be part of a wider multi-skilled team of scientists, technologists and meteorologists who work on nowcasting research and development.

As our Foundation Scientist - Nowcasting R&D, the key duties are:

  • To support the research and development of nowcasting systems.
  • To contribute to the presentation and publication/documentation of the Nowcasting team’s work.
  • To develop the skills required to fulfil the Scientist Role.

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities
  • Expertise in Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science or Data Science demonstrated by a degree or equivalent experience or qualifications (Expert by Nature)
  • Demonstrated ability to apply broad scientific knowledge to specific problems (Experts by nature)
  • Experience in scientific computing, such as analysing and plotting data in Python (Experts by nature).
  • Able to work as part of a team to achieve a goal (Better together)
  • Excellent communication skills (Force for good)
