Summary

The role of JNCC is to provide evidence and advice on nature conservation issues that affect the UK as a whole and internationally. Our work is concerned with ensuring there is a healthy, properly functioning natural environment as the foundation for sustained economic growth, prospering communities and personal wellbeing. We have approximately 200 science and technical staff across a wide range of disciplines based mainly in Peterborough and Aberdeen. Most of the corporate services team is based in Peterborough.

These roles sit within in the Finance & Planning team reporting to the Head of Finance and Planning, working with Finance & Planning colleagues to deliver a wide range of services, including statutory reporting, management accounts, and forecasting and performance reporting to internal and external stakeholders, including Defra, the National Audit Office, internal audit and other managers and directors within the organisation.

Job Description:
Post duties will include

  • Acting as a Financial Business Partner to budget holders, team leaders and directors across the organisation.
  • Ensuring that training and guidance for the areas included within the role are up to date and delivered in a way that is appropriate for the audience.
  • Working with other colleagues in the team for month end and year end close and also in the production of audit schedules.
  • Working with the Head of Finance and Planning and the other Finance Business Partners to ensure coherent and well-planned management of the team overall.
  • As the roles develop line management of staff may be added.
  • Developing an understanding of the work of the other Finance Business Partners to be able to backfill those roles in critical times
  • Advising and signing off on project costings

“Financial Accounting” role specific:
  • Month end GL Journals, Accruals, prepayments etc
  • Various daily, weekly and monthly reports
  • Overseeing bank and other balance sheet reconciliations
  • Maintenance and reconciliation of payroll control accounts
  • Management Information reporting and supporting schedules
  • Month end procedures
  • Year end accounts production, liaison with auditors
  • Liaising with budget holders and other stakeholders both internally and externally

“Supporting income” role specific:
  • Working with project managers to set and monitor individual project budgets
  • Overseeing the production of financial and performance monitoring reports, ensuring that information is efficiently gathered from project managers, quality checked, and presented to senior managers, Committee and sponsors in a way that aids their understanding and facilitates decision making.
  • Developing the internal reporting processes with the aim of achieving a flexible, real time budgeting and prioritisation process and contribute to the review and development of corporate systems.
  • Liaising with stakeholders in Defra and other organisations to ensure income is billed and collected correctly and in a timely fashion

Technical
To be a successful candidate you will have:
  • Qualified/part qualified accountant or qualified by experience
  • Knowledge of financial management principles and processes
  • Experience of working within a Finance Team
  • Proven experience of delivering to strict deadlines
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Good communication and organisational skills

Experience (Responsibilities)
To be a successful candidate you will have:
  • Experience in engaging stakeholders at all levels
  • Experience in the preparation of management accounts
  • Experience in the preparation of financial accounts and of liaising with auditors (financial role, essential)
  • Understanding of the requirements of Managing Public Money and over governing documents (desirable)
