Overview Of The Role

A new and exciting opportunity for a Field Services Engineer has arisen at UK Biobank. You will be working in a small team ensuring there is a customer-focussed, high quality and efficient engineering and facilities management service across all of our sites (currently: Cheadle, Greater Manchester, Newcastle, Reading and Bristol). This is a varied and challenging role, in which you will be involved in fault diagnosis and first line repairs on numerous plant and laboratory systems, as well as assisting in managing site services in line with health and safety regulations.You will have accountability to, and be line managed, by the Head of Estates and Technical Services.35 hours per week (Monday – Friday 9:00AM – 5:00PM), flexible to suit travel needs. Out our hours working maybe required from time to time.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the engineering and facilities management for UK Biobank’s imaging centres in close collaboration with the respective Centre Managers and others under the direction of the Head of Estates and Technical Services.
  • Support the Head of Estates and Technical Services with engineering and facilities management of UK Biobank’s other sites.
  • Maintenance, fault diagnosis and first line repairs to all plant and emergency/security systems.
  • Undertake regular checks of key systems onsite and remotely.
  • Upgrades to site infrastructure including equipment, plant and work spaces in response to obsolescence and sustainability review, and to accommodate new teams, projects, equipment and processes.
  • Assist with installation and commissioning, validation, calibration and ongoing maintenance of plant, equipment and systems.
  • Provide input to the creation, maintenance and update of documentation and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all key systems, creating a shared knowledge base for bespoke equipment.
  • Assist in quality and efficiency improvement programs.
  • Assist in the management of onsite contractors in line with UK Biobank’s ’Permit to Work’ system and Health and Safety regulations.
  • Assist in the day-to-day assessment and maintenance of onsite Health and Safety, including inspections and active monitoring of the facilities, systems and safety equipment, working with the Head of Health and Safety and Health, Safety and Sustainability Co-ordinator.
  • Assist with providing out of hours support (as required), responding to system / site faults and activating UK Biobank’s Business Continuity Plan when necessary.

Essential

About you
  • Experience of supporting complex facilities infrastructure and services.
  • Experience in HVAC, Mechanical or Electrical engineering.
  • Able to work effectively in a team but also to complete agreed tasks with a minimum of supervision.
  • Able to work accurately to verbal or written instructions, and/or SOPs.
  • Willing and able to travel regularly to imaging centre locations in the UK.
  • Full, clean driving license
  • Able to plan own workload and balance multiple priorities and tight deadlines.
  • Able to listen and clearly communicate results or issues
  • IT literate, including use of Microsoft Excel, Word etc. or similar

Desirable
  • Recognised electrical or mechanical engineering qualification.
  • Experience of working to a recognised quality system (e.g. ISO 9001).
  • Experience of working in healthcare, scientific or laboratory facilities.
  • Experience of Construction Design and Management (CDM) regulations and practice
