Your New Role


We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent, Field Engineer to join our Highways England team on-site in Bolton.

Amey is working in partnership with Highways England, to provide maintenance and response services for more than 300 miles of strategic road network in the Northwest, connecting the cities of Manchester, Liverpool and the surrounding areas.

Responsible for incident response, winter maintenance services, and severe weather delivery, the teams will oversee traffic management during incidents on some of the region’s busiest motorways: the M6, M56 and M62.

We aim to provide the best possible quality of service to our customers by ensuring we deliver a well-maintained strategic road network for the Northwest through all-weather seasons and traffic incidents.

The Field Engineer plays an important part in carrying out cyclic and reactive maintenance. The role involves responsibility for technology maintenance on the Northwest motorway and trunk road network in Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Merseyside, and Lancashire on various types of equipment.

The standard hours of work are42 hours per week, Monday – Friday.

You will be responsible for:

  • Routine and corrective maintenance of roadside highway technology assets, ancillary equipment and/or other highways systems to ensure effective delivery of ADAMr service levels, further supported by period inspections
  • Accurate collection and processing of data to enable fault free analysis of equipment performance
  • Analysis of data to assess performance of equipment within contractual requirements, ensuring correct storage of information once complete
  • Out of hours working to support service contract requirements. Including on-call fault attendance rota and/or out of hours maintenance to ensure contract restore times are met
  • Undertake appropriate training with the addition of new equipment and systems as and when necessary, via formal and informal training, including on the job training

We want to hear from you if you have:

  • Successful completion of mandatory NHSS training requirements; working towards LANTRA ‘Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Servicing and commissioning Highway Electrical Systems’ qualification
  • Excellent communication skills at all levels to create great working relationships
  • Effective planning and organisation tools to better help day to day problem solving
  • Proactive solutions and are self-motivated
  • A UK driving licence is essential for this role

In addition to this, it would be desirable if you have HNC or B/TEC in Electrical/Electronics/Telecommunications Engineering and experience working on Highways Technology assets or closely related technical skills to help you hit the ground running, although this is not essential as we will provide you with the required development you need to bring you up to speed.
