The work undertaken by The James Hutton Group is at the top of the global agenda tackling problems such as the impact of climate change and threats to food, biodiversity, soils and water security.

We are seeking to recruit a field work assistant (Band B) to join our enthusiastic and highly motivated team within the technical group of the Environmental and Biogeochemical Sciences Department. The postholder will based at our Aberdeen site.

The post holder will join the field team responsible for operating monitoring sites, that are part of National and International networks, establishing new experimental sites and collating large amounts of environmental data. The work underpins many broad science areas, in particular those related to catchment hydrology and natural flood management, water quality, and climate change impacts.

The post holder will be expected to help to prepare equipment prior to making site visits and help afterwards to process samples, carry out basic laboratory measurements, input data into excel and collate records in electronic and paper form. Due to the nature of the post, and the requirement to travel to sites, sometimes in remote locations, a flexible approach to working times is required.

Salary on first appointment is normally to the bottom of the scale, although in exceptional circumstancesan appointment further up the scale may be considered.

Main Duties of Postholder
  • Assist with the installation and maintenance of environmental monitoring equipment, for example weather stations and water level gauges.
  • Assist with the collection of environmental samples such as soil, water and vegetation.
  • Assist with the processing of samples prior to further analysis.
  • Carry out basic laboratory analysis.
  • Assist with the collation of electronic and paper data records.
  • Record information accurately and follow protocols correctly.
  • Follow health and safety guidance at all times.
Person Specification

Essential

Education/Experience/Skills
  • Full, clean, driving licence
  • Willingness to work outdoors in all types of weather
  • Willingness to travel regularly and to stay away from home overnight occasionally
  • HNC or relevant work experience
Desirable
  • Competent in the use of Excel and Word
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Emergency First Aid at work qualification, or similar.
  • Confident working in or near water (with due regard for H&S)
  • Experience driving 4WD vehicles off road
  • Experience maintaining, installing or operating environmental monitoring equipment.
  • Experience of carrying out basic laboratory measurements
