CASUAL SHOP ASSISTANT

House Estate Farm Shop for and on Manager and Assistant behalf of Creating Tomorrow College Manager with regards to shop support and provision of educational opportunities for students

This job description may be amended at any time, following consultation between the Trust

Core purpose

A shop assistant with a twist – as a shop assistant you will support the daily running and success of The Farm Shop maximizing sales of products; through ensuring an effective, efficient & friendly service to customers is provided. The twist, you will be also become a trusted assistant mentor, supporting the students from the college, as they work alongside you at the shop.

Main Responsibilities will include:

To support the manager and assistant manager to ensure the smooth and effective running of the farm shop through;

  • Supporting the day to day operations of the shop, from open to close.
  • Maintaining a detailed knowledge of the Shop’s products, sales & marketing activities, in order to provide a first class information service to customers.
  • Ensure customers are served at the tills in a positive, friendly manner
  • Supporting the shop by dealing with customer enquiries face to face to ensure first class customer relations.
  • Dealing with any customer complaints by escalating to the manager or general manager on shift.
  • Recognise and respond to sales opportunities to maximise promotional activities for the shop’s range of products through cross selling and up selling, advising customers of other products available.
  • Supporting and inspiring Creating Tomorrow College students in their roles, tasks and activities in store.
  • Make effective use of visual merchandising to make products more enticing to customers
  • Ensure the shelves are cleaned and fully stocked at all times
  • Support and maintain the stock rotation system, always pulling the oldest products to the front, discounting products a couple of days before their expiry date and removing stock from the shelves the evening the date expires
  • Advising managers on shift when stock is low.
  • Ensure all opening & closing checks and relevant records are completed as per agreed daily/monthly processes
  • Support evening/weekend events hosted by The Farm Shop onsite.
  • Comply with all Health and Safety, HACCP, COSHH and Food Safety legislation and take responsibility for your own health & safety.
  • Checking incoming stock for the correct quantities / best before dates / damages and any delivery errors are reported to the manager on shift on the day of arrival
  • Provide regular customer feedback to the Manager and Assistant Manager.

Uniform, Clothing, Mobile Phones

  • Dress smart and sensibly in line with weather and season. No open toe-shoes, high heels or sandals.
  • Wearing appropriate clothing, suitable for a family friendly shop.
  • Shop Assistants will be required to wear The Farm Shop apron over their normal clothing when on duty (supplied by The Farm Shop)
  • Shop Assistants will be required to wear a name tag when on duty (supplied by The Farm

Shop)

  • Long hair is to be tied back and nails kept to a sensible length.
  • Mobile phones are only allowed to be kept on a person if agreed with the manager on shift.

Hours of work, shifts, breaks and annual leave

Hours of work
The shop is open to the general public, in line with Chester House Estate opening times, seven days a week:

  • 10am – 4pm every Sunday
  • 9am – 5pm Monday to Saturday (between February Half Term and October Half

Term)

  • 10am – 4pm Monday to Saturday (between November and Mid-February)

There will on occasion be additional hours offered to support events and other activity on site in which The Farm Shop is a participant.

Shifts will vary, but will often start 30minutes before store opening and finish 30minutes after closing.

Breaks

  • For each 6 hour shift – you will receive a 30minute (unpaid) break. This break time will be advised by the manager on shift and cannot be taken at the beginning or end of the day.

General duties and responsibilities (College Support)

  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of a positive culture that embeds the College’s values, and ensures that students and staff feel valued, safe and supported.
  • Support Creating Tomorrow College students in the work place.
  • Presenting a positive, “can do” attitude and taking personal responsibility for own actions.
  • Committed to a culture of continuous improvement and ensuring that own contribution to the role and the College is of the highest standard.
  • Represent The Farm Shop, and in turn College, positively and effectively in dealings with external parties.
  • Take responsibility for own continuing professional development as agreed in any appraisal processes
  • Responsible for taking all appropriate measures to safeguard young people and promote their welfare.
  • Advising management of any sickness / absence via an agreed communication platform, and an agreed timely manner.
  • Take responsibility for own transportation to and from Chester House Estate
  • Agree to under take an enhanced DBS if shortlisted in role.

Support for the College:

  • Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child/vulnerable adult protection, health and safety, security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to the appropriate person.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with professional colleagues and parents.
  • Participate as required in meetings with professional colleagues and parents in respect of duties and responsibilities of your role.
  • All staff in The Farm Shop and College will be expected to accept reasonable flexibility in working arrangements and the allocation of duties.
  • This job description reflects the major tasks to be carried out by Shop Assistant and identifies a level of responsibility at which they will be required to work. In the interests of effective working, the major tasks may be reviewed from time to time to reflect changing needs and circumstances. Such reviews and any consequential changes will be carried out in consultation with the post holder and General

Manager.
