Summary

The Communications Team sits within the Partnerships and Communications Unit in the Strategy and Performance Directorate. The team has four functions: External Communications, Internal Communications, Strategic Communications; and Editorial and Design.

We require an External Communications Manager to lead the team to support the achievement of DBS’ strategic objective to keep people informed. Leading a team of two External Communications Advisors and a Campaigns Advisor, your role is to provide leadership and direction, and ensure the right skills, knowledge, and technology are in place to deliver high quality external communications for DBS.

As External Communications Manager, you will lead on all external communication activities including media management both reactive and proactive, manage the organisation’s social media channels and oversee external facing campaigns. You will be responsible for managing the organisation’s website and also develop public relations plans for specific areas of the business.

You will be a creative thinker with a passion for sharing stories and promoting the good work of the organisation. You will have a thorough knowledge of social media with experience of growing channels.

Job description

he post holder will:
  • Provide strategic media relations advice and approaches to support the organisation
  • Support the Head of Communications in providing strategic advice to SLT and board members
  • Manage and evaluate the impact of social media and digital communications
  • Develop and implement operational public relations plans to deliver effective communications that supports the organisation’s strategic vision
  • Be able to write high quality copy for a variety of publications and communications channels
  • Develop and deliver a media relations plan to gain visibility and wider understanding of DBS and to raise the profile of the organisation
  • Deliver a press office that effectively and professionally manages media enquiries
  • Oversee the management of a media database to ensure that media enquiries, responses and other useful resources are captured and evaluated
  • Lead the development and delivery of our social media channels
  • Manage the media monitoring and social media listening tools and produce regular reports
  • Oversee the management of the non-mainstream DBS pages on the GOV.UK platform and any future external facing website
  • Work closely with other departments to help develop external stakeholder relations
  • Oversee the development of all proactive campaigns
  • Be an active member of the Communications Team management, demonstrating leadership qualities and proactively supporting all aspects of the work of the wider team.
  • With other Communications Team colleagues, work to foster a culture of knowledge sharing and continuous improvement amongst staff in the team and across the wider organisation.

Ability
Ability to produce engaging copy for different channels.

Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines

Experience
Proven experience of working in a challenging external facing communications role, with a demonstrable track record in media relations, public relations and digital media.

Experience of delivering communications plans and campaigns.

Knowledge and experience of engaging with national, regional and specialist media.

Technical
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to adapt style depending upon audience and occasion.

Knowledge and understanding of content management systems and social media scheduling tools.

Desirable criteria
