This role is based at the BGS offices in Edinburgh, which are situated on the Heriot-Watt University campus (with regular offshore expeditions)

UKRI Pay Band F/S2 – salary range is £59,461 to £65,407 (depending on qualifications and experience)

About the role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Offshore Operations / Project Manager to support ambitious, high-impact scientific ocean drilling expeditions worldwide.

The ECORD Science Operator (ESO), coordinated by the BGS and its university partners, is an exciting, long-term scientific ocean drilling project. ECORD is the European Consortium for Ocean Research Drilling, which funds the BGS and its partners to provide scientific ocean drilling expeditions under the auspices of the long-standing International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP).

The main activities and key responsibilities of the role include:

· Scope and design scientific ocean drilling expeditions within defined budgets and operational constraints, to deliver scientific proposals developed by the global geoscience community.

· Contribute to the development of scientific drilling expeditions, with multiple expeditions running in parallel at different stages of development, in collaboration with various staff within the ESO partnership.

· Contract services as required (e.g. 3rd party drilling providers, vessel operators).

· Offshore field management of scientific ocean drilling expeditions (working with industry contractors, other ESO project partners, and multinational scientific teams). The offshore work pattern is 24/7 for the duration of the offshore phase of an expedition.

· Advise ECORD representatives and scientific team members in all aspects of technical operations, possibilities, practicalities, and costs for all proposed scientific drilling expeditions.

The role would really suit an experienced engineer from either the oil & gas, site investigation or offshore infrastructure sectors.

About you

The ideal candidate will be educated to Degree level in a technical field and be highly proficient in managing large-scale, high value offshore drilling projects in a variety of offshore settings and regions of the world.

You will have a substantial amount of offshore drilling/coring experience, with significant recent experience in a practical ‘hands-on’ senior offshore role.

The successful applicant will work with a team of 20 researchers from BGS and ESO partner institutes, to design, set up and directly manage offshore IODP scientific ocean drilling expeditions.

During offshore fieldwork, you will have contractual oversight, and responsibility for decisions to ensure the efficient running of vessel/drilling sub-contracts.
