Our Business

ScottishPower is part of the Iberdrola Group, one of the world’s largest integrated utility companies and world leader in wind energy. Our focus is on wind energy, smart grids and driving the change to a cleaner, electric future. We’re proud to say we produce 100% green electricity and are well on our way to our ultimate journey to Net Zero.

We’re investing over £1.4 billion in the UK - every year - for the next 5 years. Working on cutting edge innovation projects, we’re creating a smarter, cleaner and more efficient network, as well as building and maintaining windfarms, as we work towards Net Zero. And, with contributions of £40m to charitable causes during the last 5 years we’re investing in our communities as well to create a better future, quicker, for everyone.

SP Energy Networks

Our energy landscape is going through a time of profound change. A challenge touching every part of our society, we need to eradicate carbon emissions to halt the effects of climate change. We need to change how we live our lives and replace the use of fossil fuels for transport and heat.

Electricity will be at the heart of the solution, through electric vehicles and heat pumps. And with more renewables generation and other technologies connected to the electricity grid than ever before, it’s our role to make sure we create a more efficient, cleaner, greener network to accommodate this increase in demand.

Within SP Energy Networks, we are focusing on harnessing technology and innovation to create the networks of the future. With distribution networks designed for predictable, stable demand, it’s vital we upgrade our network to create the flexibility required to cope with the extensive changes to electricity demand, generation, and consumer behaviour. Through technology and innovation, we will enable a consumer-led revolution in the use and operation of our system. It will undergo the biggest changes to its design and operation for over half a century; and you can be part of it.

Why choose SP Energy Networks?

There’s never been a more exciting time to join us, and we need great people like you to help us succeed on our journey to Net Zero! During your time on the graduate programme, you’ll face new challenges and experience a diverse range of opportunities. You might be working in different areas of the business or focusing on your chosen specialism. Either way, you’ll be creating a network of colleagues and fellow graduates that’ll support your growth and development throughout your career. Your programme is tailored to you and your personal development and will include a combination of behavioural and technical modules and placements. Our programme is designed to bring out the best in you, helping you find the career path that’s right for you.

As a graduate trainee and part of ScottishPower, you’ll have a range of benefits as well as a varied and interesting career path, including:

  • Starting salary of £28,400
  • A generous pension scheme where we’ll double match your contributions up to 10%
  • A broad range of flexible benefits including share incentive plans, employee discounts, charity matched funding and many, many more

We have an exciting and diverse range of engineering opportunities available. Our civil engineering graduates will learn to maintain, refurbish, and reinforce our existing network, as well as delivering new connections which enable renewables generation; and could be involved in £62M projects to develop a new substation for example. Whilst our land and planning graduates will pave the way for our engineers to embark on these huge feats of engineering. Perhaps power systems and design is your path, in which case you’ll learn to carry out in-depth analysis of the performance of all aspects of our network to design the network of the future. Or you could be working on monumental projects such as Eastern Link, our subsea cable project - one of the longest underwater HVDC links in the world.
