ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties will include, but are not limited to:-

  • Level 2 Engineering Apprentices will be on a placement rotation within the business, spending time and gaining experience in Operations, Manufacturing Engineering, Maintenance and Experimental Manufacturing Departments
  • Work in a safe manner ensuring the safety of yourself and others around you at all times
  • Work with your mentor to a training matrix set out to cover your Apprenticeship criteria and more
  • Work within an operations team understanding key requirements such as product quality, scheduling, bottleneck processes and flow
  • Work alongside mentor to set / changeover machining processes ensuring product quality
  • Communicate and liaise with other departments and all levels of management
  • Attend meetings with your mentor representing your department
  • Working alongside your mentor you will be responding to machine breakdowns on a day to day basis with a view to minimising downtime and improving reliability of the machines
  • Basic root cause of process problems
  • Work alongside your mentor in planning and implementing preventative maintenance activities
  • Work with your mentor to identify spare parts required to be purchased for machines
  • Creation of documentation for production processes – Work instructions etc
  • Work along side your mentor to assess risks associated with manufacturing & assembly processes
  • Work with your mentor to understand component features and how they are manufactured
  • Support continuous improvement and investigate ways to engineer out persistent problems
  • Working alongside your mentor carrying out milling, turning and grinding procedures
  • Any other ad hoc duties as required
  • Document activities completed on the company’s job booking system

Desired skills

  • Must have a practical aptitude and able to demonstrate ability to work with hand tools and measurement equipment.
  • Should enjoy working out how things work and repairing things that are broken
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Have the ability to work in a team whilst managing own responsibilities
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic and focussed environment
  • Strong work ethic
  • Personable, flexible and a proactive team player
  • Self-motivated and have a strong and flexible attitude towards work
  • To comply with H&S regulations, showing responsibility of personal safety and that of others

Desired qualifications

Mandatory

  • 3 GCSEs in English, Maths and Science at a minimum Grade B / 5-6 either expected or achieved.

Desirable

  • Higher academic qualifications, ie A levels or BTEC (welcome but not essential)

Future prospects

On a two year journey BorgWarner Apprentices will learn skills in the workplace and study at Mid Kent College to learn a wide knowledge base of Machinist skills including turning, milling, materials and maths. Succession completion of this apprenticeship could provide an opportunity to progress onto a Level 3 Engineering Apprenticeship.
