The Role

The Energy Markets Manager will play a crucial role in leading SMS’ strategic planning, development and operational delivery of the Energy Markets department, providing utility procurement, risk management, renewables management and market intelligence services to a variety of large corporate multi-site customers.

This will involve maintaining a detailed understanding of the UK wholesale and pass-through markets as well as refining and delivering bespoke risk management strategies and managing tenders.

Reporting into the Head of Utilities Bureau & Asset Management, key aspects of the role will also include overseeing departmental growth and P&L control, ensure optimal operational efficiencies and integrity of data and to promote interaction with other areas of the business.

This will be complimented by leading the development and implementation of a successful energy procurement service to support SMS’ continued growth across a number of carbon reduction asset projects.

Working Conditions - 37.5 contractual hours per week , Monday - Friday between the hours of 8am-5pm.

Key Responsibilities
  • To lead and support the Energy Markets department to deliver agreed objectives, business growth and first-class delivery.
  • To analyse and predict market developments from both a commodity and smart grid perspective.
  • To gather and disseminate expert knowledge to internal and external stakeholders
  • Providing support in managing departmental sales and marketing activity
  • Represent the department internally and externally to customers, suppliers and contractors
  • Overall responsibility for departmental performance including P&L (costs, invoicing, accruals, deferrals and debt) and commercial governance.
  • Act as senior sponsor to key clients where necessary, with responsibility for upselling new opportunities and retaining contracts through first class delivery.
  • Work together with other departments within the business where appropriate to ensure a consistent first-class service is delivered to the customer.
  • Develop, monitor and delivery of departmental KPI’s / SLA’s.
  • Maintain active engagement and relations with relevant suppliers, regulatory bodies and industry partners.
  • Pro-actively track energy markets and ensure indicators and market intelligence are acted upon and disseminated into procurement activities and purchasing strategies where appropriate.
  • Maintain an expert level awareness of developments and trends within the energy/utilities marketplace.
Skills And Knowledge
  • Subject matter expert and in-depth knowledge of purchasing and trading within Utility Markets
  • Proven experience in energy procurement and compliance, preferably for large multi-site operations
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills
  • Workload prioritisation and management for self and others
  • Experience in working across departments, drawing on knowledge and experience from around the business to deliver an objective
  • Ability to learn new skills and an appetite to develop
  • Proactive, resourceful and able to use initiative
  • Knowledge of low and zero carbon technologies with the ability to interpret energy data (an advantage)
Educational Qualifications/Memberships
  • GCSE (or equivalent) in English and Maths
  • Higher education to A-Level or Degree (or equivalent) in relevant field – desirable
