Role Description
The Strategy & Innovation team in Capital Markets is responsible for supporting the Division and its businesses in defining market opportunities, business strategies and specific strategic initiatives, as well as organic and inorganic execution routes, in support of Capital Markets vision, strategy and growth ambitions. This includes proactive origination and assessment of inorganic investment opportunities. The team also facilitates and supports the development and assessment of business-originated commercial opportunities through to business case approval and funding. In addition, the team is responsible for the strategic planning cycle, including annual divisional strategic objective setting as well as the ongoing tracking of performance against these objectives and supporting initiatives.
The role will lead the activities of the Strategy & Innovation team and will work closely with senior business leadership and other key stakeholders to make a direct contribution to the division’s strategic and commercial success.
The role will report to Head of Central Business Function, Capital Markets. The role will also work closely with Capital Markets’ business leadership, relevant Capital Markets functions, including Sustainable Finance, Business Management, Portfolio Management, Markets Pricing, Finance, Legal and Regulation, as well as Group Strategy and Group M&A.
Key Responsibilities
Strategy and corporate development
  • Work with the Division’s business leaders to define market opportunities, business strategies and specific strategic initiatives in support of the Division’s and businesses’ strategic objectives, driving the development such strategies to the point of execution
  • Canvas the market for partnership and/or investment opportunities and proactively manage the inorganic growth pipeline, including search and selection, in collaboration with business leadership, Group M&A and Group Strategy to the support the execution of the Division’s growth strategy
  • Maintain close working relationships with business leaders and other stakeholders on an ongoing basis to assess the delivery and effectiveness of existing initiatives and develop new initiatives and approaches where necessary
  • Manage Capital Markets’ existing strategic investments in collaboration with relevant business leaders to ensure these are delivering against stated strategic and financial objectives
  • Articulate and position Capital Markets’ strategy and key strategic initiatives within the Group and with senior leadership
  • Review and refresh the Capital Markets strategy as appropriate based on changing market, customer and competitive dynamics
  • Maintain regular dialogue with other business divisions and Group Strategy to identify, evaluate and action cross-LSEG initiatives with relevance to Capital Markets
  • Work with divisional business leaders, support functions and other divisions to identify and prioritise near- and longer-term opportunities in the digital assets space
Innovation & new product / service development
  • Facilitate and support the assessment of new commercial opportunities originated by business stakeholders, using robust assessment frameworks to support go / no-go decisions to progress to the next level of development
  • Work with business stakeholders, Business Management and Finance to develop robust business cases to progress new opportunities for approval and funding through relevant Capital Markets governance forums
  • Promote continuous improvements and innovation across the Division and its offerings
Strategic Planning
  • Lead the annual strategic planning cycle, including the end-to-end divisional strategic objective setting process, working closely with the Capital Markets Leadership Team and other key business and functional stakeholders
  • Monitor progress against strategic objectives, initiatives and KPIs on a regular basis, feeding into Monthly Business Reviews and other divisional and Group level reporting
Candidate Profile / Key Skills
  • Demonstrable knowledge of Capital Markets obtained through direct exposure to relevant businesses via strategic and / or commercial roles
  • Proven track record in developing commercial strategies in collaboration with businesses and other key stakeholders in a dynamic, multinational environment
  • Knowledge and practical experience within digital assets preferred, but not essential
  • Ability to deliver high quality analysis with strong strategic and commercial understanding
  • Strong planning, financial, organisational and leadership skills, including the ability to mobilise and motivate teams, set strategic directions and approaches, resolve conflicts, deliver difficult messages with grace and execute tasks with limited information and ambiguity
  • Excellent written, verbal interpersonal and communication skills, and the proven ability and gravitas to work effectively with all organisational levels, including senior leadership
  • Excellent at building and managing relationships with a wide network of internal and external stakeholders, and the ability to influence at all organisational levels across divisions and functions
  • Excellent documentation skills and the ability to create high quality materials to facilitate decision making at the business leadership level
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent, with a Master’s degree (MBA or equivalent) preferred but not essential
