The Role

Reporting to the Director General and working as part of our Executive Leadership Team (ELT), we are looking to appoint a new Director of Income (DOI). As a newly created role, our DOI will head up a new directorate, bringing together our income streams. The role will have responsibility for Fundraising, Retail and Marketing. As such, we envisage the DOI shaping PDSA’s income generation, brand position and marketing strategies cultivating a customer-focussed culture to maximise the lifetime value of our supporters.

In addition to playing a key role in shaping our organisational strategy, as part of our ELT the DOI will guide PDSA’s revenue generating functions to bring about and embed cultural change in the way that our income generation and engagement activities are carried out, thus delivering sustainable income growth necessary to allow us to expand our services. Main Purpose

As a member of our Executive Leadership Team (ELT), to have corporate responsibility for the development of PDSA’s strategic plans. To lead the development and delivery of PDSA’s income generation strategy, brand position and market presence.

Accountable for strategic leadership within PDSA
  • As a member of ELT, help Trustees to shape the overarching direction of the organisation, defining PDSA’s long-term plans and three-year strategy. Agree Business Plans and priorities to deliver these plans, strategies and public benefit impact
  • As a member of ELT, accountable for the performance and good governance of the charity and for ensuring PDSA’s resources are managed responsibly to assure its long-term future
  • Oversee the strategic investment in, procurement and management of resources and services in line with PDSA’s strategic plans engaging stakeholders and ensuring appropriate commercial agreements and contractual terms and SLAs are in place
  • Comply with all internal and external polices and legislations
Accountable for the span of income generation within the charity (fundraised, traded, partnerships, retail and e-commerce)
  • Using data and market insight, lead the identification and development of a range of income generation products, propositions and initiatives beyond the scope of existing activity which deliver both short term opportunities and long-term sustainable income growth
  • Build and utilise networks, developing long-term relationships with high-net-worth individuals and forging new business relationships and opportunities
  • To integrate plans related to income generation within the structure of the charity and present regular progress reports to the Finance & Investment and Audit & Risk Committee and the Board of Trustees
  • Maximise existing income opportunities and revenue streams investing wisely to ensure that PDSA is best positioned to capitalise commercially across all of our income generation products
Accountable for our organisational brand positioning and all marketing activity
  • Ensure PDSA’s brand positioning reflects our organisation’s ethos and values, underpins our organisational objective to be better known, loved and understood and drives support.
  • Ensure we deliver on our brand promise embedding alignment and consistency of messaging across all our touchpoints
  • To ensure that the wider marketing support is available across the whole organisation to help stakeholders achieve their agreed objectives
  • Oversee activities to control and manage reputational risk in line with the Trustees’ risk appetite including effective crisis response
Accountable for our customer, client and supporter engagement activity
  • Understand the many different customers and clients who interact with PDSA and ensure that we have a clear strategy to engage and retain their support through clear customer journeys
  • Ensure that there are effective strategies in place to maximise the lifetime value of our supporters and deliver the targeted return on investment.
Accountable for strategic leadership within function
  • Lead and inspire our marketing, fundraising and retail teams cultivating a customer-focussed culture. Ensure that the structure, culture and ways of working are fit-for-purpose and that the right resources, skills and knowledge are in place across the organisation to deliver our plans
About You
  • A track record of strategic leadership and management at board level contributing towards development and delivery of organisational strategy
  • Experience of business planning and business development
  • A proven commercial approach to income generation activities
  • Strong understanding of the market coupled with effective horizon scanning
  • Senior level experience in driving cultures of excellence, managing change and implementing or overseeing improved ways of working
  • Experience in managing large multi-disciplined teams
  • The ability to provide clear strategic direction and rigorous planning, balancing the needs of diverse groups to meet organisational objectives
  • Experienced in change management and project delivery approaches and methodologies
  • Experience of defining and delivering income strategies ‘B2C’ through a wide range of products, channels and approaches
  • Understanding of legal frameworks and governance practices
  • Strong understanding of customer insight and engagement journeys
