The role

The Property Owners team will work nationally (but predominantly in the office you will be based). You’ll work with the Head of Property as a specialist underwriter within the team. You’ll have the opportunity to influence the strategy of the book across underwriting, pricing, and proposition for Property Owners risks. It’s a great time to be entering the market so we are looking for someone who is ready to seize the opportunity and make a stamp in the market for themselves and their career.

It is a competitive market – you will need to enjoy giving a great service and want to build great relationships with your brokers so you really stand out to them. Equally, you will need to be skilful at analysing and understanding risk so you pick the right clients as potential customers for Hiscox.

What you’ll be doing:

As a Development Underwriter, you will be responsible for a panel of brokers. This means you take overall responsibility for Hiscox’s relationship, and business, with your brokers – delivering profitable growth across your panel. You will be regularly visiting your brokers to deliver a great service and build excellent relationships. You will personally underwrite new and existing policies.

  • You will underwrite and sell a range of Property Owners products within the Commercial Property Owners proposition including ; Buildings, Loss of Rent, Property Owners Liability, Engineering Breakdown, Terrorism and more to achieve overall business GWP targets
  • You’ll underwrite new and existing business with a focus on larger, more complex cases
  • Account managing your panel of brokers, working with the broker to develop and execute annual business plans using a deep understanding of the brokers’ business to achieve growth targets
  • Taking overall responsibility for Hiscox’s relationship, and business, with your brokers – delivering profitable growth across your panel
  • Identifying poorly performing brokers and identify measures to improve their business with Hiscox e.g. commission levels, profit improvement plans, retention and conversion improvement
  • Driving new business opportunities by regularly visiting brokers’ offices across the region, building a strong relationship with the individuals there and delivering a super service to them
  • Contributing to ensure the region passes Sales and Underwriting Audits

  • Knowledge of the specific line of business and appetite
  • Understanding of the underwriting lifecycle including policy wordings, pricing & claims
  • Understanding of pricing a risk and the factors that can affect pricing
  • Good knowledge of the insurance market, industry, competitors, Brokers and factors that can affect the market including soft/hard markets
  • Strong communication, relationship management and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrates a hunger for winning business
  • Able to make intelligent and innovative business decisions
  • An appreciation and understanding of legal and regulatory guidelines
  • Ideally Diploma CII qualified or exempt through relevant experience as defined by the FCA
