An exciting opportunity has arisen for an individual to join our Development Team, within the Technology function at the Cumberland Building Society, as our new Development Manager. Comprising of 5-10 Developers, our Development Team is responsible for the building and supporting of a wide range of systems and applications used by our customers and people. This is an unique opportunity to play a pivotal role as our Development team embarks on a true agile transformation journey.

The role (key responsibilities):


  • Leadership and coaching of the Development team members, ensuring that the continual progression of both the individuals and the overall team is at the heart of everything you do.
  • Line management and pastoral care of the Development Team, delivering to each team member the Society’s brighter performance programme, which includes the facilitation of regular reviews, touchpoints, coaching sessions, personal development plans etc.
  • Recruitment of new Development talent, including both permanent appointments and contract and consultancy hires.
  • Continue the embedding of an industry standard skills framework within the Development team
  • Assist with and champion the implementation of the CBS agile, Data and cloud strategies, supporting new and existing team members with the transition to agile ways of working and the cloud migration journey
  • Ensure that the Developers are organised into agile, cross-functional, empowered and self-organising delivery teams.
  • Ensure that the Developers within the delivery teams are following the agile delivery approach and agile software development lifecycle (SDLC) methods (Scrum and Kanban), so this becomes the standard approach for software projects in the Cumberland.
  • Ensure that project and delivery across legacy and the new digital platforms are appropriately resourced with the right resources, skillsets and practices.
  • Accountability for Development quality by ensuring that best practices are being followed and that the Development function has the right tools and training in place.
  • Ensuring that Development frameworks promote safe and repeatable deployments.
  • Ensure that practices around the use of data within the Development Environment follows best practices in terms of data privacy and information security standards.
  • Ensure that the Developers tooling and frameworks are being followed correctly in order to assure quality.
  • Ensure that Developers are contributing to the appropriate feedback forums, such as Retrospectives, Show and Tell, Community of Practices etc.
  • Ensure that the vision and goals for the IT Technology strategy and roadmap including the agile vision and cloud strategy are well communicated and understood across the Development team.


About You - Technical Skills


* Coding and database, including detailed knowledge or experience using: Oracle Products, especially Oracle Database, PLSQL, Forms & Reporting. At least one general purpose programming language (e.g. Java, Python, JavaScript, Ruby, Go). Test first approach to development. Cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure or AWS. Infrastructure as code using ARM templates, CloudFormation or Terraform. Microservice architectures
* Version control/code repository including the use of: GIT
* CI/CD pipelines
* Development work management tooling such as: JIRA. Microsoft DevOps. Confluence

Personal Attributes & Experience:


  • A documented track record of people leadership, coaching and management
  • Ability to take a lead role in the implementation and ongoing evolution of a software development cycle, with experience of both agile and waterfall methodologies.
  • Excellent knowledge of DevOps to achieve continuous delivery of high software quality.
  • Extensive coding and database experience including APIs.
  • Influential relationship management skills with key internal and 3rd party stakeholders.
  • Strong communication skills both written and verbal, not fazed by difficult conversations.
  • Strong analytical skills, and able to make sense of complex problems quickly.
  • Team player and willingness ‘to get stuck in’ where needed.


Location


Current working arrangements are 100% remote working due to COVID 19 until at least Autumn 2021. Future working arrangements will be a blended approach of remote working with occasional travel to Carlisle, we do not provide travel expenses to place of work.
