An opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and enthusiastic HCPC registered candidate to join the Cellular Pathology Service. This role combines Quality Management responsibility for the Cellular pathology service as well as service management for the HMD team who are based at Nottingham City Hospital.

From a quality manager perspective you will be working across all the Cellular Pathology services and interacting with the other Pathology disciplines on aspects of quality, governance, risk, safety and continual improvement. As the Deputy Service manager for HMD you will work closely with the clinical lead, Histopathologists, the technical and A+C team in developing a Specialised Integrated HMD Service.

The role is available on a permanent basis and working hours are within 8.00 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.


Main duties of the job

The post holders’ main role is to lead the continual improvement of the quality management and patient safety systems, including quality training, audit and change management processes. In particular, the post holder will support service in the maintenance of United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) and other appropriate accreditation and regulatory requirements e.g. Human Tissue Authority (HTA) and Screening Quality Assurance Services (SQAS)

They will also be responsible for. A significant sub-division of the service providing leadership, management and specialist scientific guidance. The post holder will manage the delegated budget for the area.

The successful candidate will also be required to be familiar with risk management processes, incident investigation and management processes, performing trending analysis and producing regulatory performance reports for Cellular Pathology and pathology Care group meetings.


Working for our organisation

Cellular Pathology is based across both campuses with 30 Consultant Histopathologists, 17 speciality trainees, 20 A+C staff and 121 technical staff. Services include Bereavement and Mortuary; diagnostic Cytology; Histopathology; HMD; Specialist labs Neuro and paediatrics; photography and Translational Research.

The department is actively planning a move to digital pathology in the autumn of this year with a roll out across all specialities in the following 12 -1 8 months, during this time pathology will also be implementing a new LIMS system and introducing new equipment as part of a Managed Service Contract.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will be a member of the departmental management team and assist in the delivery of a quality driven, cost effective, patient focused service. To provide that service in a manner commensurate with scientific and clinical professions within pathology.

They will also be responsible for a significant sub-division of the service providing leadership, management and specialist scientific guidance. The post holder will manage the delegated budget for the area.

The post holder will be expected to manage the area, leading others to perform (and where appropriate performing) specialised analyses of pathological samples using various technologies and reporting the results as appropriate.

The post holders’ main role is to act as Quality Manager for the service and will have delegated responsibility for the planning, implementation, maintenance and monitoring of the departmental Quality Management System (QMS), reporting on progress to senior laboratory management. The Quality Manager, in conjunction with the Operational Head of Service and Pathology Quality, Training and Health and Safety Manager shall contribute to the development of the QMS as required by national accreditation organisations and in line with the Pathology QMS. Any recommended improvements to the QMS will be fed to the Pathology quality team to ensure a consistent improvement in service.

The post holder will be leading Cellular Pathology wide activities for their specialty area according to the needs of the Department.

Training and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MSc Postgraduate qualification (or equivalent Demonstratable experience)
  • Evidence of training within a health setting that leads to registration with a statutory body such as HCPC
  • Evidence of higher specialist training in appropriate area (Quality Management), gained through short courses or distance learning to post graduate level

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive specialist experience of Quality Management and managing Quality Issues at a service level, including performance management and monitoring and complaints investigation handling.
  • Significant experience of effectively managing day to day HR process e.g. appraisal and absence management
  • Significant experience of laboratory accreditation standards and assessment visit requirements.
Desirable criteria
  • Able to demonstrate knowledge of financial management and budgetary control.
  • Experienced in used of electronic quality management databases and DATIX

Planning and organisation skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to carry out workforce planning for a section of the service. Able to organise a broad range of programs pertaining to a section. Able to develop strategies to meet objectives and workload demand.

Analytical and Judgemental skills

Essential criteria
  • Judgements involving a range of highly complex facts or situations, which require analysis, and interpretation of a range of options.
  • Ability to deliver, monitor and plan services at an Operational level
