Job summary

The Digital and Operation group is responsible for transforming the organisation’s digital, technology and information services, ensuring that they meet the needs of internal and external users. The teams within the group are: Digital Change, Data and Insight, and Technology, which includes Information Management.

The Portfolio, Projects and Improvement team sits within Digital Change and supports activity across all of Ofsted’s business areas. The team ensures that all of Ofsted’s change initiatives are focused on delivering our strategic priorities with emphasis on the operational efficiency of our systems and processes. The portfolio provides the delivery insight of critical change projects across Digital change and manages the allocation of resources and deployment to work on both small change and our most high-profile projects and programmes.

As part of the Portfolio, Projects and Improvement team, the post holder will manage one or more agile projects, typically to deliver a specific product or transformation via a multi-disciplinary, highly skilled digital team. This will involve delivering complex digital projects, breaking down barriers for the team and both planning at a higher level and getting into the detail to make things happen when needed.

The role will also play a key role in supporting our digital strategy across Ofsted, supporting the development of a community of practice around agile and delivering training and support.

The key responsibilities of the role are outlined below. However, this is an overview of the role and is not exhaustive. Ofsted reserves the right to assign other duties commensurate with the B1 grade as required.

  • To deliver projects and products using the appropriate agile project management methodology, learning & iterating frequently.
  • To work with Product Managers to define the roadmap for our products and translate these into user stories.
  • Lead stakeholder mapping and manage communications and updates to stakeholders.
  • Participate in Agile communities of practice across government and role model good agile practices.
  • Provide coaching/mentoring and support to the wider product team ensuring strong delivery building momentum.
  • Lead planning phases across delivery teams.
  • Understand and track dependencies across projects, supporting the production of project documentation.
  • Proactively keep sprints on track, by actively unblocking challenges that are stopping the team delivering.
  • To lead the collaborative, dynamic planning process - prioritising the work that needs to be done against the capacity and capability of teams.
  • Matrix-managing a multidisciplinary team.
  • To ensure all products are built to an appropriate level of quality for the stage (alpha/beta/production).
  • To actively participating in our agile community, sharing and re-applying skills and knowledge and bringing in best practice.
