Data Scientist

Would you like to join a growing data science team, apply your expertise to real-world data and deliver valuable insights to customers? We currently have a vacancy for a Data Scientist within our Maritime Services business.

As a Data Scientist at Maritime Services, you will be contributing to the development of new and existing products as well as undertaking original research to enhance BAE Systems’ knowledge base and capability within the field of Prognostics and Health Management. Working with various data sets including time-series, text data and transactional records, you will be using innovative machine learning techniques to deliver novel insights to support our engineering teams. This role will enable you to put your curiosity and skills into play and allow you to work with various stakeholders via exposure to different areas of the business, all with the aim of maintaining BAE Systems’ position at the forefront of this technology.

This role will provide you with the opportunity to join an agile and fast-growing team where you can learn from our in-house experts in the field and have access to training and conferences to support your technical development. Hybrid working and flexible hours are available to suit our candidates’ needs.

Your Main Responsibilities As a Data Scientist Will Involve
  • Applying a range of machine learning techniques, data mining, prescriptive and predictive analytics to improve business capability
  • Applying designated quantitative techniques, statistics, time series analysis, optimisation, and simulation to develop appropriate models for classification, regression, and prediction
  • Supporting the development and deployment of data science workflows to streamline business processes for agile decision making
  • Visualising results of data analysis, designing dashboards and presenting using storytelling methods
  • Analysing large and diverse datasets to provide clear and insights for a range of business applications
  • Researching and assessing new data science techniques via literature reviews and engagement with academia and/or SMEs.
  • Engaging with data science and or analytics capabilities across BAE Systems business units
  • Presenting research and insights to stakeholders with different levels of technical understanding
Your Skills And Qualifications
  • Background in Statistics, Data Science and Machine learning
  • Experience using Python and its application to data science projects
  • Experience working with time-series data
  • Understand and ability to follow the data science lifecycle for a project (including problem definition, training and validation, interpretation, and deployment)
  • Experience working with a range of data sources (e.g. SQL, No-SQL, APIs, flat-files)
  • Good communication skills to be able to communicate with customers and internal stakeholders
  • A degree in a relevant subject or experience of working in a similar role
What We Are Looking For In You

Above all, you should demonstrate a curiosity for working with data, backed up with proven data science expertise. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal are necessary to allow you to interact and build relationships with internal and external stakeholders. You should have the ability to distil complex ideas and opportunities into clear business questions and be able to translate into tangible business benefits for functional leaders and SMEs without using technical language
