About this role

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Data Engineering Specialist to join our growing team of data professionals. This role will be based in either our Birmingham or Bristol office and will require 5 days a week office presence.

This role will have a strong impact on Fiber Network Delivery (FND’s) data and will lead a team that will be responsible for creation, development, maintenance and running of FND’s data sets. It will also cover three different roles: Data Strategy, Data Production, and Data Integrity.

You’ll be an FND senior data expert and will be responsible for a variety of data development across all FND’s products (e.g. Ethernet, Non-Switch, NGA products, etc.), and all FND’s programmes (e.g. BDUK, NewSites, Fibre Cities, etc). You’ll have an understanding and capability to collect data from stores (such as the 300+ operational systems used in FND, databases, SharePoint, etc), and understand how to share data with the business (storage, scheduling, self-serve etc).

The impact that you have had on FND’s data will be clear. You and your team will have improved FND’s data environment through improved data quality, reduced the effort taken to manipulate and deal with data, and improved governance. The outcome will be that the data improvement will have driven a corresponding improvement in FND’s operational performance when it is used by analytical teams through FND.

Your team will untangle the complex data which currently exists and turn this into structured data which will be used by various teams across BI and wider FND to drive operational insight.

You’ll have the following responsibilities

  • You, and your team, will champion data in FND and will do this by working closely with key stakeholders
  • Enable a culture of making data driven decisions across all layers of FND and you’ll help users understand the tools and data already available, so they can self-serve as appropriate
  • Work effectively with Technology to address and solve FND’s data problems
  • Help deliver our Data Strategy to move FND forward and drive transformational change in the data space
  • Build the right levels of governance so that you ensure FND builds data in line with common data architecture and standards, and so that the quality of our data improves
  • Help to enable transformational change in the data space – for example, assessment and migration of daily processing to cloud environments such as Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
  • Build new structured database entities and bring in new data feeds for the Business Intelligence team to leverage.
  • Your team will adapt and improve PL/SQL so that our data builds are efficient and effective and are easy for analysts to use
  • Create automated (scheduled) data build PL/SQL or Streamsets pipelines to meet new requirements, or when source data changes, so that it reduces the amount of manual intervention needed to produce our structured data

You’ll have the following skills & experience

  • Degree in a relevant subject, or equivalent relevant professional experience in the data space.
  • Be clear communicator, able to explain complex technical issues to senior management, enabling efficient decision making.
  • Be a highly capable developer in Oracle PL/SQL.
  • Have proven experience of working in emerging technologies such as Cloud
  • Experience of working with offshore teams (including TSO) and delivering success through virtual teams (desirable)
  • Proven competence in tools such as Oracle SQL, PL/SQL, Hadoop, Openreach Datalab, etc.
  • Experience of working with offshore teams (including TSO) and delivering success through virtual teams (desirable)
  • Have a strong ability to coach and be able to get the best out of a technical professional team.

As well as offering a competitive base salary, you’ll also have a rewarding bonus scheme, access to equity schemes and an attractive pension offer.
